Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” made history this weekend with a record-shattering estimated global debut of $1,209.0 million, becoming the first film in history to surpass $1 billion in its opening weekend. It reached the billion-dollar threshold in just five days, more than twice as fast as its predecessor “Avengers: Infinity War,” which held the record at 11 days. The film also set domestic and international records.

“Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre both in terms of storytelling and at the box office,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “Though ‘Endgame’ is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world.”

“From the very beginning with ‘Iron Man,’ all we’ve wanted to do was tell stories that brought these characters to life onscreen the way we’ve experienced them as fans of the comics,” said Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios. “That we’ve had so many other successes in this journey leading to this unbelievable result with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has been almost entirely due to the fans around the world who have supported us through it all. Our directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, and our writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, really brought this story home, and I am also incredibly thankful for our cast and filmmakers from across the MCU and all who’ve worked so hard to make these films the best they can be, including the amazing teams at Marvel Studios and Disney. And of course, without Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, none of this would have been possible.”

Said directors Anthony and Joe Russo, “We poured our heart and soul into ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ hoping to tell a story that would inspire audiences around the world. Our family of cast and crew felt honored to be entrusted with bringing the Infinity Saga to a close. To Kevin Feige, everyone at Disney and Marvel, and the incredible, global community of fans – thank you.”

Seven years after releasing the first film to ever break the $200 million mark in its debut with 2012’s “The Avengers,” Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Studios have posted the first-ever $300 million domestic debut in history with “Avengers: Endgame.” The film kicked off with a record $60 million in Thursday previews contributing to a record first-day gross of $156.7 million. A record estimated Saturday of $109 million and a record estimated Sunday of $84.3 million bring the estimated debut to $350 million across three days from an all-time industry high 4,662 theatres.

The estimated international debut of $859 million, including a record estimated debut of $330.5 million in China, is also the highest of all time and even surpasses the previous global debut record of $640 million set by “Avengers: Infinity War” last year (which did not include a day-and-date debut in China).

Fighting alongside men in the war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Pictures presents, in association with Tencent Pictures and Wanda Pictures, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, “Wonder Woman.” The film is being distributed in 3D and 2D in select theaters and IMAX worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

M. Night Shyamalan’s SPLIT Number One Film In North America With $46 Million

split_final

M. Night Shyamalan’s suspense thriller SPLIT was the number one movie in North America, scaring up an impressive $46 million in its debut for the 3rd weekend in January.

Shyamalan returns to the captivating grip of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs with Split, an original thriller that delves into the mysterious recesses of one man’s fractured, gifted mind. Following 2015’s breakout hit The Visit, Shyamalan reunites with producer Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series, The Gift) for the film.

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

Read Tom Stockman’s review here.

Back Lot Music has released the soundtrack album for Universal Pictures’ SPLIT. The soundtrack includes new music from composer West Dylan Thordson, and the digital soundtrack release coincides with the film’s domestic release today. A vinyl version of the album is planned for later this year.

Check it out now on Spotify.

Thordson is a composer and bandleader who got his start in the Twin Cities music scene before moving to New York and developing his career as a composer of film scores.

After leading the band, A Whisper in the Noise for many years, he caught his first big break when Shyamalan featured Thordson’s version of Bob Dylan’s classic “The Times They Are A-Changin'” at the end of Shyamalan’s film Lady in the Water.

download

Though Thordson’s move to New York was meant to be temporary, until the end of working on the film Foxcatcher, his rise in the ranks of film composers continued in 2015 when he scored every episode of the HBO hit series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.  It was this series that lead Thordson to working on Split, after Shyamalan and team became fans of his score from the series.

Discussing his work with Shyamalan on the film, Thordson says, “Night was meticulous as a director on SPLIT, seeing the score’s role as shadowing the emotional journey of the characters on screen as the story unfolded. As for the sonic colors, we heavily focused on keeping the timbre animalistic and raw.”

2015 North American Box Office Breaks Records For Christmas Weekend

boxoffice

Rentrak has announced that the 2015 Christmas holiday weekend was the highest-earning Christmas weekend in North American box office history, and the second weekend to ever surpass the $300 million threshold.

A wide assortment of movies brought record numbers of patrons to movie theaters across the U.S. during the Christmas holiday weekend, giving the industry its biggest overall Christmas weekend take in North American box office history, with an estimated $300 million from Friday through Sunday. This record comes just one week after the opening weekend of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, which was the first $300 million-plus weekend in box office history.

On the seventh chapter of the STAR WARS saga, Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst, Paul Dergarabedian says, “the franchise demolished more records as it hit the $1 billion mark in just 12 days, faster in than any other film in box office history and also became the fastest film to hit $500 million in North America in a record 10 days.”

“The fact that we have back-to-back record-breaking weekends – both of which crossed the $300 million threshold for the first time ever – is a testament to the power and allure of the movie theater experience today,” adds Dergarabedian. “The crop of movies in theaters during this holiday season is second to none and is unparalleled in terms their appeal to a wide range of audiences male and female, old and young alike.

Led by the latest STAR WARS installment, star-powered new releases including the Will Ferrell comedy DADDY’S HOME, Jennifer Lawrence in JOY, Will Smith in CONCUSSION, Leonardo DiCaprio in THE REVENANT and director Quentin Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT, as well as expansions of critical favorites like THE DANISH GIRL and THE BIG SHORT and other must-see films such as SPOTLIGHT and CAROL, all contributed to this weekend’s record-breaking numbers.
