SINNERS Sees Historic 16 Oscar Nominations – Full List For 98th Academy Awards

Oscar®-nominated actor Danielle Brooks and actor Lewis Pullman announced the 98th Oscars® nominations today (Thursday, January 22, 2026), live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills via a global livestream on Oscars.org, Oscar.com and the Academy’s digital platforms, ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC News Live, Disney+, Hulu, broadcast media and an international satellite feed.

With 16 nominations, SINNERS (released in cinemas on April 17) set the record for most nominations for a film. The previous record of 14 was shared by All about Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016). ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER saw 13 nominations while FRANKENSTEIN, MARTY SUPREME and SENTIMENTAL VALUE each saw 9. HAMNET received 8 nods. Chloé Zhao’s nomination for HAMNET is the 11th Directing nomination for a woman. She is the second woman to receive multiple directing nominations, following Jane Campion. Steven Spielberg received his 14th nomination for Best Picture, a record for an individual producer (since 1951 when producers were first named as nominees).

Warner Bros. saw the most nominations for a studio with 30.

With some nominees still to be determined, a record 74 women are currently nominated this year. The previous record of 71 was set in 2023.

Brooks and Pullman announced the nominees in two groups starting at 5:30 a.m. PT, followed by the remaining categories at 5:41 a.m. PT.

Academy members from each of the 19 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, costume designers nominate costume designers, etc.  In the Animated Feature Film, Animated Short Film, International Feature Film and Live Action Short Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of members from all branches who opt in to participate and have met the eligibility requirements.  All active members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.  Members submitted nomination ballots from 88 countries.

Twenty-four categories will be awarded at the 98th Oscars.  Each category has five nominees, except for Best Picture, which has 10. Active members of the Academy must view all nominated films to be eligible to vote.

Finals voting begins on Thursday, February 26, 2026, and concludes on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Visit https://www.oscars.org/oscars/voting for more information.

All rounds of Oscars voting are conducted by secret online ballot, tabulated by the independent accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The 98th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC, streamed live on Hulu and airs live in more than 200 territories worldwide.

Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks host the announcement of the 98th Oscars® nominations, on Tuesday, January 22, 2026.

Tom Cruise, Debbie Allen, Wynn Thomas And Dolly Parton To Receive Academy Honorary Awards At The Academy’s 16th Governors Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that its Board of Governors voted to present Academy Honorary Awards to Debbie AllenTom Cruise and Wynn Thomas, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Dolly Parton. The four Oscar® statuettes will be presented at the Academy’s 16th Governors Awards event on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood.

“This year’s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,” said Academy President Janet Yang. “The Academy’s Board of Governors is honored to recognize these brilliant artists. Debbie Allen is a trailblazing choreographer and actor, whose work has captivated generations and crossed genres. Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all. Beloved performer Dolly Parton exemplifies the spirit of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through her unwavering dedication to charitable efforts. And production designer Wynn Thomas has brought some of the most enduring films to life through a visionary eye and mastery of his craft.”

Allen’s indelible impact on screen spans nearly five decades as a choreographer, actor, and producer. She choreographed the Academy Awards® ceremony seven times, as well as films including “Forget Paris,” “A Jazzman’s Blues” and “The Six Triple Eight.” Her producing credits include “Amistad” and “A Star for Rose.” Allen made her mark as an actress with “Fame,” “Ragtime” and “Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling.”

One of the most recognized and highest-grossing actors of all time, Cruise has been a committed advocate of the theatrical experience, and he helped to usher the industry through a challenging time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Showcasing a deep commitment to his craft – including performing all of his own stunts – his expansive body of work includes his Oscar-nominated acting roles in “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Jerry Maguire” and “Magnolia,” and the Oscar-nominated “Top Gun: Maverick,” for which he earned a Best Picture nomination as producer. His other notable film credits include “Risky Business,” “A Few Good Men,” “Interview with the Vampire,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Vanilla Sky” and the “Mission: Impossible” film series.

Parton is an international icon whose remarkable career spans seven decades. A renowned musical artist and one of the most accomplished in history, with 49 studio albums and more than 100 million records sold worldwide, she has starred in such films as “Nine to Five” and “Steel Magnolias.” She has earned two Oscar nominations in the Original Song category for “Nine to Five” and for “Travelin’ Thru” from “Transamerica.” With this Governors Award, a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, Parton will be recognized for her decades-long humanitarian efforts. She has founded various charitable and philanthropic organizations, including the Dollywood Foundation, which was created in 1988 to inspire the children of East Tennessee – her home state – to achieve educational success. Additionally, her literacy program, “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library,” launched in 1995 in honor of her father, has provided children with 285 million books. It evolved into an international movement and remains the signature program of the Dollywood Foundation.

Dolly Parton performs “Travelin’ Thru,” from the film Transamerica nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, during the 78th Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA on Sunday, March 5, 2006.

Acclaimed production designer Thomas began his career working on Spike Lee’s “She’s Gotta Have It,” which would be the first of several collaborations between the two. Thomas’s film credits include Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X” and “Da 5 Bloods.” Other notable credits from his career include the Best Picture-winning “A Beautiful Mind,” as well as “Cinderella Man” and “Hidden Figures,” to name a few.

The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences in any discipline, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, is given “to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities.”

97th Oscars – ANORA Wins 5 Academy Awards

Conan O’Brien hosts the live ABC telecast of the 97th Oscars® at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

The independent film made for $6 million won the top prize at the 97th Academy Awards. Winning five Oscars, ANORA took home the gold for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay.

The 97th Oscars opened with a “We Love LA” movie montage followed by “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” sung by Ariana Grande and “Home” sung By Cynthia Erivo. The standing ovation was then met by the duo singing Wicked’s “Defying Gravity”. A true show-stopping opener to the 97th Academy Awards concluded with thunderous applause from the audience in the Dolby Theatre, as well as an eruption in the pressroom.

Host Conan O’Brien welcomed everyone to the telecast and Hollywood’s Biggest Night “at 4pm in the afternoon and let’s do this thing!” He had the audience laughing with jokes about the various 10 Best Picture nominees. O’Brien even made a jab about controversial Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón, “If you’re gonna tweet tonight, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel” and a funny jab at Jeff Bezos, Amazon and the next pick for James Bond. No subject or actor was safe, even John Lithgow, and Adam Sandler made an appearance in shorts and a zippered hoodie. Go Sandman! O’Brien was the perfect host, very funny and delivered one of the best opening monologues in years. It landed really well in the pressroom too…Go Coco! The comedian expertly and emotionally navigated from humor to a more serious tone about the Southern California fires. “Even in the face of terrible wildfires and divisive politics, the work which is what this is about, the work, continues and next year and for years to come through the trauma and joy this seemingly absurd ritual is going to be here.” But wait, he wasn’t over. There was even an opening musical number where he promised, “I Wont Waste Time” accompanied with a DUNE sandworm playing on the piano and Deadpool tumbling in. The 2025 Oscars announcer was actor Nick Offerman.

It’s All Come Down To This – The 97th Oscars

Contributed by Melissa Thompson, Michelle McCue

Hollywood’s high holiday and biggest night is almost here.

The pinnacle of the awards season, the 97th Oscars, is at hand and 2024 was certainly an exciting time for film enthusiasts! The conclave have made their choices, the votes have been tallied and we’re all just waiting for the big reveal Sunday night. Will there be any wicked surprises? Which actors and actresses will take home the gold? And what movie will be named Best Picture of the Year?

With previous precursor award wins (BAFTA, DGA, WGA, PGA) all over the map, even five top Oscar experts – Gold Derby’s Debra Birnbaum, Variety’s Clayton Davis, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, Deadline’s Pete Hammond, and Indiewire’s Anne Thompson – weren’t quite sure of their ultimate picks. This unpredictable season is one of the most difficult conundrums for the experts and a nail-biter to the very end. (video)

For the past 15 years, We Are Movie Geeks has been among the global journalists invited by The Academy in the pressroom as the winners make their way backstage with their statues for their first interviews. Once again, we’ll be there and giving live updates – on X and Facebook.

Earlier this week host Conan O’Brien helped with the Red Carpet rollout for the 97th Oscars on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Previously announced Oscars presenters include Mark Hamill, Miles Teller, Dave Bautista, Harrison Ford, Gal Gadot, Andrew Garfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Margaret Qualley, Alba Rohrwacher, Zoe Saldaña, Rachel Zegler, Joe Alwyn, Halle Berry, Sterling K. Brown, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Ana de Armas, Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Downey Jr., Elle Fanning, Whoopi Goldberg, Selena Gomez, Goldie Hawn, Scarlett Johansson, John Lithgow, Cillian Murphy, Connie Nielsen, Amy Poehler, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, June Squibb, Ben Stiller, Emma Stone, Oprah Winfrey and Bowen Yang.

On Tuesday, February 25, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held a cocktail reception and private dinner for the nominees of the 97th Oscars. The evening also included the annual nominee class photo.

172 nominees populated the iconic class photo at the Oscar Nominees Dinner held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The official pre-Oscars nomination celebration and the annual class photo are generally held during a Beverly Hills Hilton luncheon, which was cancelled earlier this year due to
the LA wildfires.

The A-list nominees turned out in force, with only a small handful absent, Kieran Culkin and Elton John among the MIA nominees. Many were enjoying their first time being nominated, with others being recognized for multiple nominations – Diane Warren has 16!

Dinner was, of course, prepared by Wolfgang Puck— New York steak, roasted salmon, pan roasted jidori chicken and blackpepper gnocchi cacio e pepe, served family-style.

Excitement was definitely the vibe of the night, as we roll full steam ahead to Sunday’s 97th Annual Academy Awards.

Catch up on the 10 Best Picture Nominees.

Are you in an Oscar pool or hosting a party? WAMG has your Oscar ballot for your golden party!

The Oscars will air live on ABC and stream live on Hulu on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, with the official live red carpet show airing at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

75th Annual ACE Eddie Awards Announce New Date – Friday, March 14

American Cinema Editors (ACE) has announced a new date for the 75th Annual ACE Eddie Awards, which were postponed from their original date on January 18 due to the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. The ceremony will now be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at UCLA’s Royce Hall. As previously announced, the 75th Annual ACE Eddie Awards is now a fundraiser with a portion of ticket sales and sponsorships going to wildfire relief. The event has also transitioned from Black Tie to “Come As You Are” allowing guests to focus on solidarity and celebration, rather than attire. ACE will be announcing other wildfire relief efforts before the ceremony.

As also previously announced, Wicked director Jon M. Chu will receive the Filmmaker of the Year award recognizing a filmmaker who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film, and film editors Maysie Hoy, ACE and Paul Hirsch, ACE will receive Career Achievement awards for their outstanding contributions to film editing. More information on the 2025 ACE Eddie Awards honorees may be found here.

“We are incredibly grateful to UCLA and Royce Hall for their flexibility and support in helping us secure this new date,” said ACE Executive Director Jenni McCormick. “We are also thankful for the understanding of our nominees, honorees, sponsors, and partners as we navigated this unforeseen circumstance and added fundraising elements to our show in response to the overwhelming need our community is facing due to the recent wildfires. We look forward to coming together and celebrating the outstanding achievements of our honorees and nominees on March 14th.”

ACE president Sabrina Plisco, ACE stated “This additional time allows us to readjust, show our resilience as a community and properly celebrate our incredible honorees and nominees in a meaningful way while also giving back to those impacted by the wildfires. We are so excited for the evening and look forward to honoring Jon M. Chu, Maysie Hoy, ACE and Paul Hirsch, ACE.”

The ACE Eddie Awards are presented annually to recognize excellence in film and television editing. Winners in 14 categories of film, television and documentaries will be announced throughout the evening which will be hosted by Dave Holmes and presided over by ACE president Sabrina Plisco, ACE.

A full list of previously announced nominees is available on the ACE website.
