Dennis Hopper’s Controversial 1980 Masterpiece OUT OF THE BLUE Getting a 4K Restoration and Theatrical Release

“Subvert normality. Punk is not sexual, it’s just aggression. Destroy. Kill All Hippies. I’m not talking at you, I’m talking to you. Anarchy. Disco sucks. I don’t wanna hear about you, I wanna hear from you. This is Gorgeous. Does anybody outthere read me? Disco sucks, kill all hippies. Pretty vacant, eh? Subvert normality. Signing off. This is Gorgeous. Signing off.”

“Thumbs Up! Bitter, unforgettable. An unsung treasure.” – Roger Ebert

Shocking. Controversial. Unforgettable.  – Dennis Hopper’s brilliant punk rock masterpiece of adolescent rebellion is ready for a new, long overdue close-up!

A kind of spiritual sequel (and cautionary counterpoint) to Hopper’s own Easy Rider, OUT OF THE BLUE chronicles the idealism of the sixties decline into the hazy nihilism of the 1980’s. Here’s a new trailer for the restoration:

Don Barnes (Dennis Hopper) is a truck driver in prison for drunkenly smashing his rig into a school bus. Linda Manz (Days of Heaven) plays Cebe, his daughter, a teen rebel obsessed with Elvis and The Sex Pistols. Her mother (Sharon Farrell) waitresses, shoots up drugs and takes refuge in the arms of other men. Cebe runs away to Vancouver’s punk scene and ends up on probation under the care of psychiatrist Raymond Burr. After Don’s release, the family struggles to re-connect before the revelation of dark secrets leads to a harrowing conclusion.

ABOUT DENNIS HOPPER:  Born in Dodge City, Kansas, May 17,1936: Actor-director Dennis Hopper’s “Out of the Blue” premiered at Cannes in 1980. His directorial debut, “Easy Rider “(1969, Cannes Award “Best First Work,” was a countercultural landmark whose success helped spark the New Hollywood era of seventies filmmaking). His follow-up “The Last Movie” (1971) won the CIDALC Critics Prize Award at the Venice Film Festival. He went on to direct “Out of the Blue,”(1980) – Official Cannes selection; “Colors,” (1988) “Backtrack,” (1990) and “The Hot Spot,” (1990). His 200+ acting roles include “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Giant,” “Mad Dog Morgan,” “Apocalypse Now,” “Blue Velvet,” and “Hoosiers” (Academy Award nomination, Best Supporting Actor). Also a renowned photographer and artist, Hopper died in Los Angeles, May 29, 2010.

FILM PRESERVATION – Working from the original 35mm negative restored by Discovery in 2010, John Alan Simon and Elizabeth Karr’s Discovery Productions undertook the digital scan and mastering of Out of the Blue to premiere as an official selection at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, preserving Hopper’s landmark film to make it available to new audiences. The New 4K restoration is being shown for the first time on the big screen theatrically at Metrograph in November, 2021 in New York.Despite critical acclaim at its original Cannes premiere in 1980, OUT OF THE BLUE went unreleased because it was considered too bleak for U.S. audiences.

John Alan Simon, then a film critic/journalist, rescued the film from the shelf, secured distribution rights and took it on the road with Dennis Hopper back in 1982 to art house theaters across the U.S. including a 17-week record-breaking run at the Coolidge Corner Cinema in Boston and then NYC and Los Angeles theatrical releases.

“It’s incredibly important to us that OUT OF THE BLUE be preserved for future generations to experience its emotional impact and as the artistic achievement that helped re-establish Dennis Hopper as an important American director,” commented Elizabeth Karr on behalf of Discovery Productions.

“For me, this restoration project was pay-back for all I learned from Dennis Hopper when we originally took OUT OF THE BLUE on the road in 1982 after I rescued it from the shelf.  He was an amazing artist and friend and OUT OF THE BLUE remains as unforgettable as he was and serves as an indelible tribute to the talents of Linda Manz,” John Alan Simon from Discovery Productions concluded.

Buster Keaton in the Silent Classic THE GENERAL Screening With Live Music November 13th at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle Illinois

“If you lose this war don’t blame me.”

Buster Keaton in the Silent Classic THE GENERAL will be screening with Live Music November 13th at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle Illinois (1091 13th St, Carlyle, IL 62231) at 7pm. Organist Benjamin Kolodziej from Dallas, Texas, will accompany the 1926 movie. A $10 donation is suggested for the event or $40 for a family of five or more. There will be free unlimited refreshments with the donation of two non-perishable food items. A Facebook invite for the event can be found HERE

Johnny Gray (Keaton) only has two loves in his life – his train “The General” and Miss Annabelle Lee. When the Civil War breaks out, the Lee family’s proud military history means that Gray must enlist to keep favour with Annabelle. However he is refused service on the grounds that his engineering role is more important and finds himself rejected by the Lee’s. A year passes and the North plans to win the war by sending spies into the South to steal a train and make their way north, burning all the supply bridges behind them and clearing the way for a crushing assault. However they steal The General – coincidently with Annabelle Lee still on board. Taking another engine but forgetting reinforcements, Gray sets out in pursuit.

THE GENERAL provides the kind of blockbuster entertainment a lot of today’s action-film fans don’t know what they’re missing and provides the kind of humor that’s varied in physical prowess and ingenuity with timing and detail and deadpan expressionism. THE GENERAL is rollicking fun filmed to perfection, making it Keaton’s most famous film. Don’t miss this chance to see it on a big screen with live music.

After a round of partying he can’t remember, World War II veteran Dave Hirsh is placed on a bus headed for the last place he’d choose Parkman, Indiana, the hometown Hirsh hasn’t seen in well over decade. Frank Sinatra plays Hirsh, whose arrival in Parkman brings small-town hypocrisy to the unforgiving light of day in this character-driven tale directed by Vincente Minnelli and based on a novel by James Jones (whose From Here to Eternity led to Sinatra’s 1953 Oscar). In his first screen pairing with Sinatra, Dean Martin plays a sharp-witted card sharp. HOWTIME announced today THE REAL CHARLIE CHAPLIN, a kaleidoscopic portrait of a man who became an immortal legend, whose life was as extraordinary as his art, will premiere Saturday, December 11, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Having unprecedented access to the Chaplin archives, THE REAL CHARLIE CHAPLIN blends dramatic reconstructions with never-before-heard recordings, intimate home movies, behind-the-scenes material, and newly restored classic films to reveal a side of the worldwide icon that – until now – has been shrouded in mystery. Tracing back a century ago – when Chaplin first stepped onto the screen – the film recounts his meteoric rise from the slums of Victorian London to the heights of Hollywood superstardom to his scandalous fall from grace. For decades, he was the most famous man in the world. But who was THE REAL CHARLIE CHAPLIN?

This is the second feature from Middleton and Spinney, who have partnered on a range of creative non-fiction projects for the past decade. In 2014, they adapted the audio diaries of Australian theologian John Hull into a series of short films, including the Emmy® Award-winning Notes on Blindness. Their debut feature of the same name premiered at the Sundance® Film Festival in 2016 and was nominated for six British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), winning for Best Documentary, and was nominated for three BAFTAs, including Best Documentary and Outstanding British Film.

Following a world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and screenings at the BFI London Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival, and Hamptons International Film Festival, THE REAL CHARLIE CHAPLIN will screen at DOC NYC and AFI Fest next month. The film is nominated for three Critics Choice Doc Awards, including Best Archival Documentary, Best Narration and Best Editing, and was longlisted for Best Documentary with BIFA.

Kim Basinger and Dan Ackroyd in MY STEPMOTHER IS AN ALIEN Available on Blu-ray December 14th From Arrow Video

“Earthmen will fall to their knees, betray their country and give away valuable real estate for a desirable woman.”

Kim Basinger and Dan Ackroyd in MY STEPMOTHER IS AN ALIEN (1988) will be available on Blu-ray December 14th from Arrow Video

He married a girl from out of town… Way out of town.

Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters), Kim Basinger (The Nice Guys) and Jon Lovitz (Southland Tales) star in a fish-out-of-water comedy with a sci-fi twist that questions whether a romance between two star-crossed lovers who are literally worlds apart can ever work.

When widowed astronomer Steve Mills (Aykroyd) inadvertently causes a gravitational disruption in deep space, a race of hyper-advanced alien lifeforms sends one of their own to investigate, disguised in the alluring human form of Celeste (Basinger). Tasked with seducing the lovelorn Steve in a bid to gain access to his scientific research, Celeste finds herself falling for the man she’s been sent to swindle. But they’ve not counted on Steve’s young daughter Jessie (Alyson Hannigan, TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who’s none too thrilled by the prospect of a new mother – especially not one from another planet.

Funny and touching in equal measure, My Stepmother is an Alien is an offbeat and at times surprisingly risqué comedy that confirms the adage that what unites us is far greater than what divides us… even if what divides us happens to be an entire galaxy.
