Fred Zinnemann’s DAY OF THE JACKAL Available on Blu-ray September 25th From Arrow Video

DAY OF THE JACKAL will be available on Blu-ray September 25th from Arrow Video

In 1971, Frederick Forsyth shot to bestseller status with his debut novel, The Day of the Jackal taut, utterly plausible, almost documentarian in its realism and attention to detail. Two years later, director Fred Zinnemann (High Noon) turned a gripping novel into a nail-biting cinematic experience.

August 1962: the latest attempt on the life of French President Charles de Gaulle by the far right paramilitary organization, the OAS, ends in chaos, with its architect-in-chief dead at the hands of a firing squad. Demoralized and on the verge of bankruptcy, the OAS leaders meet in secret to plan their next move. In a last desperate attempt to eliminate de Gaulle, they opt to employ the services of a hired assassin from outside the fold. Enter the Jackal (Edward Fox, Ghandi): charismatic, calculating, cold as ice. As the Jackal closes in on his target, a race against the clock ensues to identify and put a stop to a killer whose identity, whereabouts and modus operandi are completely unknown.

Co-starring a plethora of talent, including Michael Lonsdale (Munich), Derek Jacobi (The Odessa File) and Cyril Cusack (1984) and featuring striking cinematography by Jean Tournier (Moonraker), The Day of the Jackal remains one of the greatest political thrillers of all time.

Guillermo del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK Midnights at The Tivoli This Weekend

“Ghosts are real, that much I know. I’ve seen them all my life…”

Guillermo del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK plays this weekend (August 24th and 25th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

A couple of years before winning this year’s Oscars, Guillermo del Toro delivered a beautiful tale of unexpected love, sorrow, twist and passion with his 2015 ghost story CRIMSON PEAK. If you missed it (and a lot of people did), it is well worth a watch if you are looking for a movie that sucks you in and delivers in a gothic and enchanting way. CRIMSON PEAK is the tale of an aspiring author named Edith  (Mia Wasikowska). In the aftermath of a family tragedy,  she is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds – and remembers. Don’t miss your chance to see CRIMSON PEAK again on the big screen.

The Tivoli’s located at 6350 Delmar Blvd., University City, MO. Admission is a mere $8!

The Tivoli’s website can be found HERE

Sept 14-15: THE WITCH

Reel Late at the Tivoli takes place every Friday and Saturday night and We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman (that’s me!) is there on Fridays with custom trivia questions about the films and always has DVDs, posters, and other cool stuff to give away. Ticket prices are $8. We hope to see everyone late at night in the coming weeks.

George C. Scott in THE CHANGELING This Weekend Midnights at The Moolah

“That house is not fit to live in. No one’s been able to live in it. It doesn’t want people!”

THE CHANGELING (1980) screens Midnights this weekend (August 17th and 18th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.

George C. Scott loses his wife and daughter in a car accident, moves to Seattle, and rents a gigantic old mansion with a haunted secret past. THE CHANGELING is skillfully directed by Peter Medak who gets more that even he probably bargained from a solid cast of actors, a wonderful script, and one great-looking eerie old house. Medak creates tons of suspense with the barest sight of blood. This film reeks atmosphere. The house reeks atmosphere. Scott’s performance and that of veteran Melvyn Douglass reek atmosphere. Doors creak, balls mysteriously bounce, water runs, windows break in the old house trying to tell Scott about the secret of a young child that once lived there. The script is fanciful yet well-written and very creative. Scott gives an atypically subdued performance that suggests passion, heartbreak, and tenacity. The rest of the performers are very good too. Some of the scenes that really stand out in my mind are flashback sequences showing the terrible secret that has been hidden in the house for over 70 years. THE CHANGELING is one classy scare film and now you’ll have your chance to see it on the big screen!

Win Tickets to Robert Dubac’s THE BOOK OF MORON at the Playhouse @ Westport Plaza Stage – Runs September 13th-23rd

Robert Dubac’s Off-Broadway solo hit, THE BOOK OF MORON, has been described as one of the most hilarious, intelligent and scorching satirical attacks on idiocracy since Mark Twain. The show makes a triumphant return to the Playhouse @ Westport Plaza for a limited engagement September 13-23. Tickets may be purchased through MetroTix at metrotix.com or by phone at 314-534-1111. Additionally, tickets will also be available at the Playhouse @ Westport Plaza box office one hour prior to show time. All seats are $50.

We Are Movie Geeks would like to give away a four-pack  of tickets for opening night of THE BOOK OF MORON at Playhouse @ Westport Plaza on September 13th at 8pm. All you have to do is leave a comment below with your email address. We’ll announce the winner soon.

The New York Times raves, “Riding shotgun with intelligence and absurdity, THE BOOK OF MORON crashes head first into the barriers of sex, race, religion, politics and the media. It may be offensive to some but there’s laughter for all!”

Having been brainwashed by a culture that worships Kardashians over character, delusion over truth and selfies over self-effacement, Dubac begins his journey with one simple question: Who am I? What do I believe? What’s the point? Okay, that’s three questions, but suffice to say, he has no answers. Just voices. Inner voices who come to life with precision and wit. One by one they pull him into a hysterical alternative universe of critical thought in search of the bigger picture.

THE BOOK OF MORON is a fast-paced, hilarious production that combines satire and theater into what is being described by critics as: “A terrific show, witty and incisive, provocative and smart, an erudite comic trek” (Denver Post), “Dubac is a master of his craft” (Huffington Post). Comedian Dana Carvey declares, “If funny were a religion, Bob is nothing short of a miracle!” And, Kevin Nealon adds, “Start laughing really hard now or you’re going to miss a lot from laughing so hard during the show!”

In THE BOOK OF MORON Dubac portrays, Robert, an everyman who has lost sight of the bigger picture. He’s been bombarded by so much hype and spin he can’t remember who he is or what he believes. Does he have a purpose? Can he think for himself? Is the truth in the details or in the pudding? He hasn’t a clue. He racks his brain searching for answers but finds nothing but voices.

First, his Voice of Reason convinces him to think outside the box but not without a fight from his Inner Moron. Then, his Common Sense teaches him critical thought so he can think for himself instead of relying on the media. Next, his Inner Child shows him how to use just enough innocence to question authority without getting spanked. His Inner Asshold urges him to use both four syllable and four letter words to battle censorship. Along the way, he finds his Scruples who encourage him to open “The Door of Truth.” But, when it hits him in the head he realizes the ultimate paradox – the truth hurts and is funny at the same time. It’s all for one and one for all as Robert’s inner voices take him on a freight train of provocative thought to find the bigger picture and wake up from the coma of modern day life.

Robert Dubac belongs to a unique breed of humorists, bringing to mind the best of Lily Tomlin and Mark Twain. He creates characters that boggle our minds with biting wit and rapid-fire satire while simultaneously crafting a simple story that binds us all together. His ability to combine the raucous laughter of stand-up comedy with the startling thrill of live theater continues to fill seats everywhere.

The Playhouse @ Westport Plaza is located at 635 Westport Plaza in Maryland Heights, Missouri and is a venue filling a niche for a variety of Broadway and Off-Broadway entertainment that would otherwise not find its way to the St. Louis area.
