Guillermo del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK Available on Blu-ray From Arrow Video January 15th

From the imagination of Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pan s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water) comes Crimson Peak, a lavish, stunningly realised journey into the dark heart of Gothic romance…

Beginning in Buffalo, New York, during the 1880s, Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Stoker) as Edith Cushing, an aspiring writer who is haunted by the death of her mother. Edith s falls in love with seductive stranger Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston, Avengers Assemble), who whisks her off to Allerdale Hall, his baronial, yet dilapidated English mansion built upon a mountain of blood-red clay. Here Edith meets Lucille (Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty), Thomas s sister who at times seems hostile and jealous. As Edith struggles to feel at home in the imposing residence, she gradually uncovers a horrendous family secret and encounters supernatural forces that will help her discover the terrible truth behind Crimson Peak.

Boasting incredibly intricate and ornate production design and a rich visual style, del Toro s film is a grandiose, boldly baroque triumph of Gothic decadence, which expertly combines and contrasts the sublimely beautiful with the shockingly grotesque. Crimson Peak is presented here in sumptuous special packaging, with a wealth of extra features, affording unprecedented insight in to the making of this modern Gothic classic.

De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films – GREETINGS, HI MOM, and THE WEDDING PARTY Available on Blu-ray From Arrow Video December 11th

De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films – GREETINGS, HI MOM, and THE WEDDING PARTY will be available on Blu-ray from Arrow Video on December 11th

In 1963, Robert De Niro stepped in front of a movie camera for the first time. The resulting film, a low-budget black and white comedy called The Wedding Party, would take three years to complete, and another three years to be released, but it would also establish a hugely important working relationship for the aspiring actor. One of the filmmakers, long before he became synonymous with suspense thanks to Carrie, Dressed to Kill and other classics, was Brian De Palma. He and De Niro would team up again in the next few years for two more comedies, both with a countercultural bent.

Greetings, the first film to receive an X certificate in the United States, is a freewheeling satire focusing on a trio of twentysomething friends a conspiracy theorist, a filmmaker, and a voyeur played by De Niro as they try to avoid the Vietnam War draft. Hi, Mom!, originally named Son of Greetings, returns to De Niro s voyeur, now an aspiring maker of adult films, for another humorous glimpse at late-sixties society, this time turning its attentions to experimental theater, cinéma vérité, the African American experience, and the white middle classes.

Brought together for the first time and each newly restored by Arrow Films especially for this release these three films offer a fascinating insight into the early careers of two American cinema s major talents.

Robert Altman’s BREWSTER McCLOUD Now Available on Blu-ray From Warner Archives

Exciting news for fans of director Robert Altman. His BREWSTER McCLOUD (1970) is now available on Blu-ray From Warner Archives. Ordering information can be found HERE

Master filmsmith Robert Altman followed up the smash hit M*A*S*H* with one of the most unusual – and decidedly non-commercial – films of his career.  A fairy tale for the post-flower power era, Brewster McCloud enchants while dripping venom across its own escapist heart. Bud Cort’s Brewster sits at the heart of the fable, a young man who yearns to fly like a bird and lives in a fallout shelter inside the recently built Houston Astrodome. Sally Kellerman plays the fairy godmother figure who aids Brewster in his quest to construct his human-powered wings, while the Wicked Witch of the West herself, Margaret Hamilton, plays Brewster’s anthem-belting nemesis, Daphne Heap. Shelly Duvall embodies temptation for Brewster in the part of Suzanne, while Michael Murphy’s Frank Shaft kicks the film into Bullitt-worthy car chase territory. Oh – wait – we forgot the serial killer part… This bona-fide cult AND classic piece of Seventies cinema soars while showcasing Altman’s striking and eccentric vision on high flying high definition in this new master. 16×9 Widescreen

Brewster McCloud (Bud Cort) lives deep within the cavernous underground of the Houston Astrodome, but his dreams rise much higher. He aims to fly. Not in a plane. But with strapped-on wings he’s designing – encouraged by a mysterious woman (Sally Kellerman) who may be his guardian angel. But Brewster McCloud, Robert Altman’s wild, anarchic cult fave, isn’t about dreams as much as it is about the highs and lows of humanity. It’s a serial-killer mystery. A frenetic car-chase flick. A crazy circus-finale comedy. Shelley Duvall debuts as the tour guide whose seduction of Brewster may lead to his undoing. Ah, love. The thing that at once shapes and unravels us. The thing that may or may not give us wings.

I used an air rifle I got one Christmas growing up, but I never had a mail-in decoder ring which required me to consume mass quantities of Ovaltine, I never ran into bullies with yellow eyes, and I never took a dare to stick my tongue to an aluminum pole in the middle of winter. Of all the holiday films that have been released in the last 34 years, did anyone envision that the sleepy low budget film from 1983, generically titled A CHRISTMAS STORY, would be at the top of the almost everyone’s list? It actually bombed when first released in theater (though I saw it there twice) but has developed such an enormous following over the years, mostly through cable TV airings, that it probably is #1 on more favorite Christmas movies list than anything. Who would have thought Bob Clark, director of terrifying low-budget horror movies such as BLACK CHRISTMAS and DEATHDREAM (as well as the raunchy comedy hit PORKY’S) could capture such an innocent and nostalgic slice of life?

christmasStory_randy_1024x768_121920080205
A CHRISTMAS STORY captured the idealism and–yes—the sadism of being a kid. Childhood is a crazy mix of hero worship, toy envy, survival of the fittest, daily fear of something, extreme innocence, and the desire to be treated as a grown-up without having to actually put up with being one. A CHRISTMAS STORY captures all these elements with sardonic poignancy. One of the greatest things about A CHRISTMAS STORY is ‘the Old Man’ played by Darren McGavin (61 when the film was made), who is constantly busy throughout the film, whether it’s battling the *#&*#@! furnace or trying to get his *#&*#@! car started or any other number of task that he becomes occupied with and cause him to cuss. He has very little dialog with Ralphie, yet it is he who in the end gets him his BB gun.

A CHRISTMAS STORY has a kind of timelessness that makes such a beloved piece of art, one we watch over and over and never get tired of it. Now you’ll have the chance to shoot your eye out and see A CHRISTMAS STORY in all its big screen glory and with an audience of fellow merrymakers when it plays 7:30pm Thursday December 21st at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave St Louis, MO 63143). Suggested admission is $6 but all of that money will support production of A FIT KID, an active lifestyle development program produced by Helping Kids Together (http://www.helpingkidstogether.com/), a St. Louis based social enterprise dedicated to building cultural diversity and social awareness among young people through the arts and active living.
