John Carpenter’s CHRISTINE Screens Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

“Whoa, whoa. You better watch what you say about my car. She’s real sensitive!”

John Carpenter’s CHRISTINE (1983), based on the novel by Stephen King screens Midnights this weekend (December 7th and 8th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.

Everyone remembers their first love. It’s just unfortunate when your first love happens to be an evil 1958 Plymouth Fury that keeps trying to murder your girlfriend. CHRISTINE, directed by John Carpenter and adapted from a Stephen King novel that was published the same year, is a story of one nerdy boy’s transformation from high school whipping boy to badass 50s-style greaser thanks to the affection of a possessed car. Easily one of the most beloved film adaptations of a King novel to date, CHRISTINE has become a horror classic and is definitely a favorite among Stephen King fans. Don’t miss you chance to catch it on the big screen this weekend at The Moolah!

THE PSYCHOTRONIC PRE-SHOW STARTS AROUND 11:30P WITH THE FILM STARTING AT MIDNIGHT.

THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD to Return for an Additional Fathom Event January 21st

On the heels of its already record-breaking release, and in response to popular demand, a third Fathom Events date has been added for Warner Bros. Pictures’ much-heralded WWI documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old,” from Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson.  The film will be screened at more than 1,000 locations in the U.S. on Monday, January 21, 2019, taking advantage of the holiday weekend.  The announcement was made today by Jeffrey Goldstein, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Events.

“They Shall Not Grow Old” debuted in North America at 1,122 locations on December 17, 2018, taking in an impressive $2.327 million.  As anticipation grew for the second Fathom Events release date, on December 27, several locations were sold out more than a week in advance.  Playing on 1,007 screens, the film earned an astounding $3.375 million for a record-shattering two-day total of $5.702 million.  It is the highest-grossing U.S. cinema event to date, for both Fathom Events and the event-cinema industry.

In making the announcement, Goldstein stated, “The response to ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ has been overwhelming.  Peter Jackson’s documentary is a towering achievement of film restoration that has conquered the ravages of time and stands as a fitting tribute to all those who fought and died in what was then called ‘the war to end all wars.’  We are so proud to be part of bringing this film to audiences across the U.S. and Canada.”

“This project has been a historic and record-setting journey for Fathom, Warner Bros., our exhibitor partners and the event cinema industry,” said Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt.  “We are honored to give audiences another chance to experience this groundbreaking documentary as it should be seen — in 3D and on the big screen.”

Tickets will be available soon at www.FathomEvents.com and participating theater box offices.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings”Trilogy, “The Hobbit” Trilogy) comes the groundbreaking documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old,” presented on the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Applying state-of-the-art restoration, colorization and 3D technologies to century-old footage — carefully chosen from hundreds of hours of original Great War film held in the archives of the Imperial War Museum (IWM) — Jackson has created an intensely gripping, immersive and authentic cinematic experience. The only narration comes from Great War veterans themselves, selected from over 600 hours of BBC and IWM archive interviews, resulting in a gripping account of “The War to End All Wars,” told by the soldiers who experienced it.

By restoring the original footage to a standard never seen before, the human face of WWI emerges with vivid clarity through the fog of time. Jackson captures the day-to-day experience of its soldiers and reveals the reality of war for those on the front line: their attitudes about the conflict; their camaraderie and their need for humor amidst the horror; the functions of daily life in the trenches; and what their lives were like during periods of rest.  Using cutting-edge techniques to transform the images of a century ago into footage that could have been shot today, Jackson both remembers and honors a generation changed forever by a global war.

“They Shall Not Grow Old” was directed by Peter Jackson and produced by Clare Olssen and Jackson, with Ken Kamins, Tessa Ross, Di Lees and Jenny Waldman serving as executive producers.  The film was edited by Jabez Olssen.  The music is by David Donaldson, Janet Roddick & Steve Roche.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Wingnut Films Production, co‐commissioned by 14‐18 NOW and Imperial War Museum in association with BBC. This film has been rated R for disturbing war images.

ESCAPE ROOM – Review

ESCAPE ROOM tells the story of a half-dozen strangers trapped in a series of rooms who need to figure out why they’re there and/or discover a way out. Also, the rooms are trying to kill them. We’ve seen this before (CUBE and MAZE RUNNER come to mind) and while ESCAPE ROOM sometimes plays like a bloodless, young-adult version of the SAW films, it’s an interesting PG-13 attempt at something a little different. Despite the generic promises of its title, ESCAPE ROOM is not as stale a take on the convention as you might expect. It begins with a nice Twilight Zone-style vibe to it, but the story tips its hand too soon, runs out of ideas, and fails to sustain suspense.

ESCAPE ROOM is a cash-in in on those interactive adventure games that have popped up in strip malls. Places where folks pay to solve a series of puzzles and riddles using clues, hints, and strategy to complete objectives and get out “alive” within a set time limit. That’s basically this film’s plot and it’s what Jason (Jay Ellis), Zoey (Taylor Russell), Danny (Nik Dodani), Amanda (Deborah Ann Woll), Mike (Tyler Labine), and Ben (Logan Miller) think they’re getting into as the story begins, but they soon learn that it’s no game and that the rooms have murderous intentions.

ESCAPE ROOM is a decent thriller, its plot structured to keep the audience guessing, and it does take these six strangers and the story to imaginative places. It’s ambitious enough and it held my attention with its pretzel-logic plot, at least for the first half. A big problem with the script is that these rooms become less and less interesting as the story progresses. The sequence in the first room, a seemingly normal den that begins turning into an oven, is clever and exciting. Room 2 isn’t a room at all, but an exterior near a frozen pond, a scene that seems to go on forever. Room 3 is an inverted pool hall, which makes for some eye-popping visuals but the sequence also seems to run on. At about the one hour mark, ESCAPE ROOM runs out of steam and starts revealing secrets about these characters and why they’re there. It turns out they all share a certain trait, but it’s not a particularly compelling twist. The story eventually enters CABIN IN THE WOODS territory, with a showdown with the game-masters behind the curtain, which spells out too much and seems anti-climactic. Though never for a moment original, ESCAPE ROOM forges ahead with the kind of conviction and energy that may keep horror junkies entertained, at least for a while.  While the strength of ESCAPE ROOM is some early tension, the weakness in is the dialogue, which sometimes turns remarkably trite. The cast is comprised of attractive actors that young viewers may recognize from TV shows, but nobody stands out. Keep your expectations low and you may find ESCAPE ROOM just crafty enough to warrant your time.

German Shocker SNOWFLAKE Now Available on Blu-ray and DVD

The shocking German thrill SNOWFLAKE is now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Artsploitation Films. SNOWFLAKE stars Reza Brojerdi, Erkan Acar, and Alexander Wolf and is directed by Adolfo J. Kolmerer and William James.

Take a dash of Tarantino, a splash of Coen brothers, a metric ton of pretzel-logic self-awareness, and a fast-paced series of humorously violent misadventures, and you’re halfway to grasping the magnificent German madness of this bizarre import. Hunting down the murderer of their families in a near-future Berlin, a gang of lowlife characters all want revenge on each other, but along the way they must contend with a myriad of wicked fairytale types—assassins, madmen, a blood-covered angel, and an electric-powered superhero—all apparently come to life through a screenplay written by a demented but clueless dentist. Must be experienced to be believed, and guaranteed to twist your mind.

Check out some of the reviews of SNOWFLAKE:

SNOWFLAKE is a dizzying, hilarious film that combines post-Tarantino action/crime drama and Charlie Kaufman’s metafictional surrealism with exhilarating results…hugely entertaining, and instantly marks debut feature director Adolfo J. Kolmerer and his collaborators in front of and behind the camera as talents to keep an eye on.” – Jason Coffman, Dailygrindhouse

“A plot that feels like Charlie Kaufman writing a movie for Guy Ritchie…Is it entertaining as hell? Absolutely.” – Matt Wedge, Dailygrindhouse

“Snowflake is an ass-kicking, blood-spurting, whip-cracking, adrenaline pumping ride through the dirty, decrepit streets and naked hinterlands of a broken German government on the cusp of new regime…Snowflake is a freewheeling roller coaster of retribution, pitch black humor and riotous bloodshed. Fans of Pulp FictionSmokin’ Aces and Boondock Saints should not let this one pass them by. I never would have known that the movie was filmed on a nano-budget over several years worth of time. The resulting project is as good – or better – than many of the things coming out of big budget Hollywood. The non-linear, character packed storyline dovetails perfectly in the end, creating a film Arend Remmers, DDS would be proud of.” – Tracy Allen, Pophorror

“Clever storytelling and characters which could be taken from early Quentin Tarantino flicks, such as 1992’s Reservoir Dogs. There is not a dull moment during the whole 120 minute run time…Snowflake is definitely a film you want to discuss with your friends after you have seen it. Being an extraordinary genre mix, CrypticRock gives Snowflake 4.5 out of 5 stars.” – CrypticRock

Snowflake is an ambitious German film, a labor of love built utilizing a miss-mash of genres presented in a non linear fashion. Snowflake is intelligent and entertainingstorytelling and I’m sure people are going to continue to lap up this style of film-making. ” – AdamtheMovieGod

A dizzying, hilarious film that combines post-Tarantino action/crime drama and Charlie Kaufman’s metafictional surrealism with exhilarating results. Screenwriter Arend Remmers and an excellent cast bring the population of the film’s criminal underworld to vivid life, and its wild narrative feels genuinely unpredictable. SNOWFLAKE makes a convincing case that there are still ways to bring something new to the kind of crime drama that followed in the wake of PULP FICTION and died off when it became apparent that most filmmakers were clueless as to what made Tarantino’s breakthrough so wildly entertaining. SNOWFLAKE is hugely entertaining, and instantly marks debut feature director Adolfo J. Kolmerer and his collaborators in front of and behind the camera as talents to keep an eye on.” – DailyGrindhouse

Snowflake is a film of the “What the f**k”-category: It’s freely floating between genres (including crime, horror, science fiction, superhero, fantasy, thriller, comedy) using as many pulp mainstays as it can along the way to twist them to mostly ironic results, it pushes absurdity (within its narrative context) to new heights without ever really losing the plot, it’s told in a violently non-narrative way that somehow makes perfect sense nevertheless, and it doesn’t hold back when it comes to violence, yet doesn’t rely too heavily on it. And for most of the time it manages to stay away from cheap jokes or too blunt social commentary. The outcome is a very fine stew that might not be for everyone, but the cult movie crowd will be sure to love it.” – SearchMyTrash

If you take two parts Pulp Fiction, one part Reservoir Dogs, a cup of John Dies at the End, and a dash of Dogma, bake it all in a dystopian future oven at 420 degrees for two hours the finished product would be Snowflake. Needless to say, it was one hell of a ride. The writing in this film is incredible. The plot is layered and meta as fuck…The performances in this movie really bring the writing to life. The cast is perfectly balanced and everyone brought their A-game to the table. This might just be the most interesting and rewatchable movie you see this season.” – Yeti, TennesseeHorror

“The plot is surreal but not in a way that feels contrived, the overall story is cleverly written…fresh and original. The directing was forever fantastic, the cinematography always on point, and the soundtrack was sublime, it just fitted the oddball tone so well. This really is a film I would recommend seeing, even if it isn’t horror. – TheRottingZombie

“In a future where vigilantes, would-be superheroes and Messiah aspirants sow blood-soaked disarray in the streets, a pair of thugs seek revenge for the murder of their families and a few clues to their own future, which they obtain by hunting down the screenwriter of the movie itself. Broadly comic and absurdly violent German action-fantasy…the performers’ enthusiasm and an aggressive visual palette should win over cult fans.” – The Los Angeles Beat
