Popeye movie is coming…in CGI.

popeyemovie

Apparently when Marvel acquires projects they intend to do something with them, and thats the case for Popeye. Marvel Head Avi Arad has recently mentioned that they intend to bring Popeye back to the big screen, and I will go out on a limb and say that it will not star Robin Williams, and his forearms will look quite a bit better. We get this from WorstPreviews:

Arad also secured the rights to “Popeye,” in hopes of rebooting that franchise as well. But he won’t go down the same path that the 1980 film, starring Robin Williams, did. He is instead planning to make it a CGI animated feature.

Well there you have it, they are going to go the route of ‘TMNT’ and then will announce a live action one a couple of months after the CGI version comes out. I understand the attraction of CGI, but come on! Give us a real person to look at, and not some animated CGI version of Popeye!

Fanastic Fest 2009: 10 must see movies

Fantastic Fest unofficially kicks off tomorrow, the 23rd with a couple of screenings and parties. To prepare for this we decided to put together a list of the 10 movies you HAVE to see during Fantastic Fest. We avoided the obvious choice with Zombieland since alot of people have already seen this, and it will be opening the final day of Fantastic Fest. The rest are sure to blow your mind.

10. ‘Sweet Karma’

A sexy mute girl takes revenge on her sisters kidnappers…why the hell would you NOT see this movie?

09. ‘Hard Revenge Milly & Hard Revenge Milly: Bloody Battle’

Come on! The title of the film is “Hard Revenge” and its title also suggests its 2 films in 1. Enough said.

08. ‘Paranormal Activity’

I can promise you that this movie is going to scare the shit out of me, and hopefully cause some people to literally poop their pants. Here is the synopsis:

After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban ‘starter’ tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

Seriously though, the picture alone is making me check around the house to make sure no spirits are messing with me.

07. ‘Daybreakers’

‘Daybreakers’ is a vampire movie based in 2019 starring Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill. Brace yourself though because this isnt ‘Twilight’ and these vampires dont glow in sunlight. Check out the synopsis below:

In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

06. ‘Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl’

With a promo photo like the one above this movie BEGS to be watched and probably multiple times. I just hope I can make it once! If you dont believe me check out the trailer below:

05. ‘Trick ‘R Treat’

This is one movie that has been on my list of must see films since I heard about it in 2007. Check out this synopsis and you will know why, plus I dont think it has gotten a single negative review yet:

It is said that Halloween is the night when the dead rise to walk among us and other unspeakable things roam free. The rituals of All Hallows Eve were devised to protect us from their evil mischief, and one small town is about to be taught a terrifying lesson that some traditions are best not forgotten. Nothing is what it seems when a suburban couple learns the dangers of blowing out a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight; four women cross paths with a costumed stalker at a local festival; a group of pranksters goes too far and discovers the horrifying truth buried in a local legend; and a cantankerous old hermit is visited by a strange trick-or-treater with a few bones to pick. Costumes and candy, ghouls and goblins, monsters and mayhem… the tricks and treats of Halloween turn deadly as strange creatures of every variety-human and otherwise-try to survive the scariest night of the year.

See? Now tell me you don’t want to see this damn movie as well?!

04. ‘Rec 2’

Everyone freaked over ‘Rec’ so I assume this one is going to have a similar effect on the masses. Plus the above photo creeps me out. Here is the synopsis:

The action continues from [Rec], with the medical officer and a SWAT team outfitted with video cameras are sent into the sealed off apartment to control the situation.

03. ‘Anti-Christ’

Can any movie be more controversial than this film? This could be one of the most controversial films of the last 10 years! Which is definitely one of the reasons I have been dying to see it. Im a sucker for controversy.

02. ‘Ninja Assassin’

Does the above photo not give you enough of an explanation as to WHY we want to see this movie so bad? Well how about the fact that Edward Douglas said its “Sin City meets Kill Bill”? The answer is yes, it does give me a funny feeling “down there”.

01. ‘Gentleman Broncos’

Jared Hess is back with a vengeance and this time with the help of one half of the Conchords Jemaine Clement and one of my favorite young hollywood actors Michael Angarano. Here is the synopsis:

Benjamin (Angarano), home-schooled by his eccentric mother (Coolidge), is a loner whose passion for writing leads him on an journey as his story first gets ripped off by the legendary fantasy novelist, Ronald Chevalier (Clement) and then is adapted into a disastrous movie by the small town’s most prolific homespun filmmaker.

Broncos is kicking off the fest and should set the tone for a super crazy Fantastic Fest.

Review: ‘The Informant’

Steven Soderbergh shot 2 movies last year, one about a whistle blower executive and the other about a high priced call girl. Both movies were released this year and with them it definitely marks the return of Soderbergh.

Normally you wouldnt assume that a film based on the inner workings of a global price fixing scheme would garner laughs, or even keep a sane person interested enough to make it through the whole thing. However thanks to the stellar acting of Matt Damon and the comic sensibilities that the script lends you cant help but wonder whats going to happen next.

Matt Damon stars as Mark Whitacre, an executive at Archer Daniels Midland, who attempts to take money from the company and it backfires when they call in the FBI to handle the extortion. When the FBI gets involved Marks wife makes him fess up about a global price fixing ADM is responsible for and they launch a full scale investigation. Mark gets involved and is responsible for helping bring the company down. In the process Mark gets into a little more than he bargained for.

What is great about this movie is they could have gone a few directions with it, and instead of boring you with mundane details that would be important, they use inner dialogue for Mark Whitacre. For example: They are in an important meeting dealing with millions of dollars, and their conversations fade out and it fades in with Mark thinking about completely random, off the wall bi-polar thoughts. After the first couple of times you get more and more intrigued and start to look forward to the next one.

All of the acting is stellar here, especially Matt Damon and Scott Bakula(who plays one of the FBI detectives that worked with Mark Whitacre). The cinematography is at its best here and you can tell that Soderbergh has definitely honed his craft.

Matt Damon officially doing Liberace biopic

Since teaming up in ‘The Informant’ Steven Soderbergh must have really loved working with Matt Damon, since he is now confirmed for the Liberace biopic. We get this from Empire:

“Matt accepted the challenge,” Soderbergh told a French newspaper at the Deauville Film Festival, which could refer to Damon putting up shelves round Soderbergh’s gaff, or his taking the role of Scott Thorsen, a lover of Liberace’s, who outed the flamboyant pianist via a palimony suit in 1982. We’re guessing it’s the latter.

Michael Douglas is currently on board to play Liberace, so we are probably going to be getting at least one Michael Douglas/Matt Damon love scene. I am very interested to see how Steven Soderbergh approaches this project. Should be a great film with all of the people currently on board.

Trailer for Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It’

thisisittrailer

Thanks to my main squeeze Neil Miller over at Film School Rejects we are able to show you the trailer for the upcoming Michael Jackson film ‘This Is It’. The movie is an edited down version of the massive amounts of footage that they took during the rehearsals for his upcoming tour.

I think that they are definitely capturing something special here, no matter how the tour would have gone off its still nice to speculate that this would have been his big comeback. I was a huge fan of his last album ‘Invincible’ and thought he definitely had it in him to take the world over again.
