Roger Ebert Documentary LIFE ITSELF to Premiere at Sundance

life itself

Like many movie fans, I grew up watching Roger Ebert in the mid-1970’s. Born and raised in Connecticut during the age of only 3 TV channels and the local PBS station, I was a young girl when I first saw on CPTV Ch. 24, ‘Sneak Previews’ with hosts Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.  The way they bantered back and forth about films made me a fan of the cinema and a certified movie geek.

Now comes LIFE ITSELF, the documentary based on renowned film critic Roger Ebert’s rollicking memoir of the same name.

It is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19 in Park City, Utah.

In a first, the film will be live streamed simultaneously to Ebert’s fans and supporters who sign up at filmmaker Kartemquin’s Indiegogo campaign. The campaign runs through midnight January 13 at Indiegogo.com.

“Roger was always at the leading edge of technology,” said Chaz Ebert, Roger’s wife and the publisher of RogerEbert.com, the movie review site the Eberts redesigned and re-launched last spring. “Kartemquin’s decision to use crowd funding for the project, and to stream the film to fans, fits nicely with Roger’s affinity for technology and his special gift of connecting to his readers across the globe. He would have wanted as many people as possible to join in this historic event.”

In another first, the Sundance Institute and IndieWire.com in conjunction with the Ebert Foundation will host the first six Roger Ebert Film Critic Scholars at the festival. Chaz adds: “The internship program that Eric Kohn at IndieWire.com started a few years ago is brilliant, and I am pleased that Robert Redford saw how to integrate it into the Sundance programs. I look forward to working with Eric and the aspiring critics. Roger loved mentoring emerging journalists and so this is particularly close to my heart.”

The Sundance Institute is the first to establish a film critic’s scholarship in Ebert’s name. Chaz is in talks to establish additional scholarships tied to other film festivals and universities. In addition, Film Independent will acknowledge Ebert at the Independent Spirit Awards March 1 with a grant to an emerging filmmaker.

Steve James, who previously won acclaim for “Hoop Dreams,” is directing LIFE ITSELF and will be conducting a Q&A afterwards.  Says James: “Roger allowed us full access so the film provides an unvarnished glimpse of his ascent as a cultural arbiter, from college newspaper editor and serial dating bachelor to television icon and devoted family man, to his decade-long cancer battle. You couldn’t ask for a better subject.”

Executive produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Zaillian (“Schindler’s List,” “Money Ball”), LIFE ITSELF was one of three films selected for special screening before members of the Sundance Institute at the festival, which runs January 16-26.

Having the film premiere at Sundance is a fitting venue, Chaz Ebert said, because Roger was an early supporter of Redford’s efforts to establish a presence to showcase independent American cinema.

The film is to be theatrically released in 2014. CNN Films has picked up the television rights.

KEVIN COSTNER Is International Spy Ethan Runner In New Photo For McG’s THREE DAYS TO KILL

M_087_DF5E6389_Hcc_cr

Kevin Costner takes on the role of international spy Ethan Runner in a brand new photo from Relativity Media’s upcoming action film 3 DAYS TO KILL. Amber Heard and Hailee Steinfeld also star in this heart pounding action-thriller directed by McG and written by Luc Besson and Adi Hasak.

I’m glad to see McG back in the director’s chair. He’s previously helmed CHARLIE’S ANGELS (really funny) and TERMINATOR SALVATION (a much needed re-fuelling of the franchise), but my favorite film of his is without a doubt, WE ARE MARSHALL, starring Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Fox and Anthony Mackie. It’s absolutely worth a watch if you’ve never seen this sports movie.

Check out the trailer for McG’s new film below.

In this heart pounding action-thriller, Kevin Costner is a dangerous international spy, who is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter, whom he’s previously kept at arm’s length to keep out of danger.

But first, he must complete one last mission- even if it means juggling the two toughest assignments yet: hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist and looking after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years, while his wife is out of town.

3 DAYS TO KILL opens in theaters everywhere on February 21st.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Highest Grossing Film Of 2013

Theatrical Key Art

Lionsgate’s THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE became the highest-grossing film released at the domestic box office in 2013 as it grossed an estimated $493,000 last night for an estimated domestic cume to date of $409.4 million in its first 49 days of release, the Company announced today.

CATCHING FIRE, which set records for the biggest November opening weekend of all time ($158.1 million) as well as the biggest three- and five-day Thanksgiving box office totals ever, has already become the 13th highest-grossing North American release in history and remains in wide release.  It passed the first Hunger Games film, which grossed $408 million at the domestic box office, on Tuesday and is the fifth fastest film ever to reach the $400 million mark at the domestic box office.

The success of CATCHING FIRE marks the first time the first two installments of a franchise have each topped $400 million at the domestic box office, and both films now rank among the top 15 domestic film releases in history.  CATCHING FIRE has also grossed $428.8 million internationally for a worldwide box office total of $838.2 million in its first seven weeks of release compared to $691 million worldwide box office generated during the entire run of the first Hunger Games film.  The Company noted that Catching Fire is the first 2D film to become the top-grossing film of the year since 2008.

The Hunger Games franchise continues to evolve into a truly global phenomenon,” said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer.  “The success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is a testament to the vision of author Suzanne Collins, the sure hand of director Francis Lawrence, the brilliant performances of a remarkably talented cast led by the amazing Jennifer Lawrence and superb execution by our motion picture production, marketing and distribution teams.  We will continue to grow the transformative Hunger Games franchise in the years to come even as we continue to develop a dynamic portfolio of premium new brands.”

The next two installments of The Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, are currently in production for release on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015, respectively.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (played by Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIREis directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins that has over 65 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

Watch Three New Featurettes From Peter Berg’s Excellent LONE SURVIVOR

Lone Survivor

Universal Pictures will release director Peter Berg’s superb LONE SURVIVOR in theaters tomorrow, January 10. It’s the first must-watch film of 2014!

Based on The New York Times bestselling true story of heroism, courage and survival, LONE SURVIVOR tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative who are ambushed by the enemy in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Faced with an impossible moral decision, the small band is isolated from help and surrounded by a much larger force of Taliban ready for war. As they confront unthinkable odds together, the four men find reserves of strength and resilience as they stay in the fight to the finish.

Ls_Resolve

The studio has released three fascinating behind-the-scenes featurettes from the set of LONE SURVIVOR.

Take a look at the cast’s advanced training and learn more about the special weapons and military equipment that were used in the film, featuring interviews from writer/director Peter Berg and Marcus Luttrell, along with the cast and crew.

Check out this interesting infographic highlighting the elite individuals who have the courage and strength to become a Navy SEAL.

LoneSurvivor_SealsInfographic

MARK WAHLBERG (The Fighter, Contraband) leads the cast as Marcus Luttrell, the author of the first-person memoir “Lone Survivor,” whose book has become a motivational resource for its lessons on how the power of the human spirit is tested when we are pushed beyond our mental and physical limits.

Starring alongside Wahlberg as the other members of the elite team who gave everything for their brothers-in-arms are TAYLOR KITSCH (Savages, Friday Night Lights) as Michael Murphy, EMILE HIRSCH (Into the Wild, television’s Bonnie and Clyde) as Danny Dietz and BEN FOSTER (3:10 to Yuma, Kill Your Darlings) as Matthew “Axe” Axelson. ERIC BANA (Star Trek, Hanna) joins the core team as Erik Kristensen, their commanding officer in Afghanistan.

Lone Survivor

With the exception of Luttrell, all were killed June 28, 2005, by enemy forces while supporting Operation Red Wings.

LONE SURVIVOR is written and directed by Peter Berg, who again crafts a striking portrait of the unbreakable bonds between men that he first explored in Friday Night Lights.

I have seen the film twice now and I can tell you it’s something you want to experience on the big screen. Berg truly respects and honors these men with a realistic, timeless and isolated portrait of the sacrifices that one small band of warriors made… and how one survived to tell their tale.

A total of 11 SEALs and 8 soldiers perished on that mountain. This day is forever marked in our history, as it became the biggest single loss of life for Naval Special Warfare forces since World War II, until August 6, 2011, when a U.S. Boeing CH-47 Chinook military helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan and 30 U.S. military personnel and 8 Afghans were killed.
