‘inFAMOUS’ Getting Feature Film Adaptation

inFAMOUS

Sony Pictures has picked up the rights for a feature film adaptation of the Sucker Punch video game ‘inFAMOUS.’   The pitch came from screenwriter Sheldon Turner, who has previously worked on the screenplays for ‘The Longest Yard,’ ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning,’ and ‘Up in the Air.’   That’s quite an eclectic slew of films to write.

The video game centers on a bike messenger who, after a massive explosion, discovers he has powers to control electricity.

“What excited me most about the game was it was the first of which I’ve come across that had a big idea and a character arc,” Turner said. “It is, I believe, the future of gaming. The game, while big and fun, is at its core a love ballad to the underachiever, which is what our hero, Cole McGrath, is.”

Universal Bringing ‘The Lorax’ to Life

lorax

Universal Studios and Illimunation Entertainment are continuing with the Dr. Seuss feature film adaptations.   ‘The Lorax’ will be a 3D animated film much in the vein of last year’s ‘Horton Hears a Who!’   Chris Renaud, story artist for ‘Horton,’ along with ‘Horton’ screenwriters Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio will be serving as co-directors on the film.   Paul and Daurio will also be serving as screenwriters on the film.

‘The Lorax’ tells the “green” story of an entrepreneur who strips a forest full of its trees despite warnings from a small creature known as the Lorax.   The film is tentatively scheduled for release on March 2nd, 2012.   Coincidentally, this will be the birthday of Seuss, real name Theodor Geisel, who died in 1991.

“Ted Geisel was prescient in an uncanny way when he wrote the book and explored themes of greed and how that can lead to the destruction of environment,” says producer Chris Meledandri.

Paul W.S. Anderson Directing ‘The Warded Man’ Next

warded man

Director Paul W.S. Anderson will be reteaming with producing partner Jeremy Bolt, as the two have picked up the rights to ‘The Warded Man.’   The two previously worked together on 2002’s ‘Resident Evil’ feature film adaptation.   Anderson will serve as director on ‘The Warded Man,’ possibly jumping on board this project as soon as filming on ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife.’ is finished.

‘The Warded Man’ is set in a future where the world has resorted back to a feudal state and nightly attacks by demons plague the population.   Three young people emerge as warriors against these attacks, particularly the title character who has spells written all over his body.

Says Anderson:

It was an occasion where it paid to be British.   It launched in the U.K. six months earlier than in the U.S., and we got wind of it when it was in galley form before the U.K. release. We think it has the potential to be a new ‘Lord of the Rings’-style epic, and the book has all this great imagery.

Bolt had this to offer:

We put our own money to buy it. We were reading all these great reviews, and we thought someone was going to buy it pretty fast.

‘The Warded Man’ is the first of a project trilogy of books by Peter V. Brett, a former ad man who wrote the novel on his Blackberry during commutes to work.

‘Wolfman’ Pushed Back… AGAIN!

wolfman

Well, here it is, folks.   Universal’s big-budget remake of ‘Wolfman’ is one step closer to never being seen by human eyes.   Slated for a release in November, it is being reported that it has once again been pushed back for a release on February 12th, 2010.   This will make the film’s release just short of four years after the announcement was made by Universal that a remake was in the works with Benicio Del Toro in the lead role.

Director Joe Johnston, taking over the spot left by Mark Romanek, shot the film from March to June of 2008, and, from there, it has been one moved back date after another.   It was originally slated to drop on February 13th, 2009, but was pushed to April 3rd.   It was then moved to the November 6th spot to give Universal more time to market it, something they haven’t even begun to do.   Re-shoots in May and the special effects by Rick Baker could have something to do with this latest decision to move the film again, but Universal hasn’t officially announced anything yet.

I do know when it was first announced, and it was scheduled for release in 2009, it was near the top of a lot of people’s “must see” lists.   Of course, these endless shifts in the release date are killing the film’s chances of generating much buzz.   Time will only tell if the film actually makes it’s February 2010 slot.

Humpday Horribleness: ‘Going Overboard’

going overboard

One of the great features over at the Internet Movie Database is the Bottom 100. Based on ratings viewers of the site give to various films, the worst of the worst films get put on this list. Some of them are on and off in a matter of days. Others stick around for the long haul, showing just how much suckage they truly emit.

It’s time to look at these movies and determine where they stand. Do they deserve to be on the Bottom 100 list? Are they not as bad as everyone says? Will they be off the list any time soon?

Here’s the breakdown for this week’s film:

going overboard

Title: ‘Going Overboard′

Release Date: May 11, 1989

Ranking on Bottom 100 (as of 7/29/2009): #69 (based on 5475 votes)

Why it’s Here: We thought in honor of Adam Sandler’s new collaboration with Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen, ‘Funny People,’ (which is bound to make each one of them enough money to buy a small country) we would go back and view one of the earlier and universally panned films of Sandler. Lucky me. ‘Going Overboard,’ in fact, Sandler’s first feature film after making a few spots on “The Cosby Show,” has to be the worst film I’ve had to write up for this column. Hokey and lame and not funny in the least, it is the one film I’ve seen that I can truly say there is absolutely nothing redeemable about.

Sandler plays Schecky Moskowitz, a name, I’m sure, writer/director Valerie Breiman, just died laughing at as soon as she wrote it. Schecky is a struggling comedian who takes a job as a waiter on a cruise ship. As luck would have it, there Miss Universe contest being held on board. This provides absolutely nothing to the story. The crew shot on this particular cruise ship that was headed for Cancun and the real Miss Universe contest, and there had to be some explanation for all the pageant contestants in the background.

Anyway, Schecky’s rival on the ship is the ship’s entertainment, a flashy comedian named Dickie Diamond, played by Scott LaRose, who can’t go 30 seconds without dropping an F-bomb on everybody. Throw in a grungy rock star, King Neptune, and General Noriega (yeah, you heard that right) and you’ve got yourselves a recipe for comedy.

Not really. This film isn’t funny in the least. It’s budget, or lack thereof, is actually flaunted in earlier moments. Schecky, talking directly to the camera, talks about how “no-budget” the film is, then provides a demonstration on how to create an earthquake by shaking the camera. This is early Sandler, way, waaaaaayyyyyy before he honed his skills as a comedian. The idea that Schecky is a struggling comedian who just can’t catch a break is about the only believable thing here.

To look at the cast list is to hang your head in shame at some of the people who stepped on board this project before they were anybody. Peter Berg and Billy Zane are at the top of that list, showing up as a sleezy manager for the rock star and King Neptune, as previously mentioned. It’s just shameful and cringe-worthy at its very worst. Billy Bob Thornton makes an appearance as an audience member. He gets a few lines, and no one in the room believes that less than ten years later, he’s have an Oscar on his mantel. Burt Young and Milton Berle give glorified cameo performances, and you can’t feel sorry for them, too bad. They’d been around Hollywood enough to know how atrocious this film was.

Stay away from ‘Going Overboard.’  In fact, the film as shelved until Sandler became a huge star nearly ten years after the film was completed.  You can probably find it in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart.   Do yourself and everyone around you a favor.  Shove it all the way to the bottom and keep moving.

Lowest of the Low Moments: As part of our journey with Schecky, we become privy to his inner thoughts.   He daydreams, and we are forced to watch these dreams come to sparkling life.   One, in particular, features Schecky and Dickie in a boxing match.   However, this isn’t just any   boxing match.   No punches are thrown, just insults.   Each insult, increasingly brutal and unfunny, causes physical harm to the opponent.   It’s as lame as it sounds.   In fact, it’s even lamer than that.   Honestly, I’m sure there are worse moments than this in the film, but your brain will be so numb to it all by the time they come around that it won’t matter.   This scene happens early enough that your still lucid and not contemplating throwing your TV in the trash to save it.

Will it Ever Get Off the List: Let’s hope not.   There isn’t much hope for ‘Going Overboard’ to ever get itself off the Bottom 100 list, nor should it.   If Sandler’s success hasn’t driven enough people to go back and watch this piece of trash, nothing will.   It only has 5475 votes compared to the just over 66,000 votes for ‘Click.’   And, honestly, the more people who see this movie, the worse the chances of it getting off this list become.   It’s wholly unfunny and completely annoying.   I’m sure this is one Sandler wants hidden in his closet for a long, long time.

See Sylvester Stallone Getting ‘Expendables’ Ink Done…

expendables

He asked for a 13, but Mick drew a 31…

Actually, we can’t guarantee this is a still from ‘The Expendables.’   For all we know, this is how Stallone and Rourke spend their off-days, throwing a few back, tattooing each others names on their backs, punching out Carl Weathers look-alikes.   You know.   Fun stuff.

From what we’re told, though, this is the moment in the film where Stallone gets the skull and raven tattoo we’ve seen in the posters.

Regardless, ‘The Expendables’ comes out on April 23rd, 2010.

New ‘Halloween II’ Pic

H2

The fine folks over at Shock Till You Drop got their mitts on this new pic from ‘Halloween II.’   It features Scout Taylor-Compton under the knife of one Mr. Michael Myers, played by Tyler Mane.

There have been pictures upon pictures coming out for ‘Halloween II.’   You could print them all out, flip them one right after another, and probably come up with some cohesive storyline.   So, thank for that Rob Zombie.   You’ve given away the entire film before it’s even gotten a release.

On an unrelated note, Zombie also spoke with MTV’s Movie Blog last week and basically said that he would never, NEVER make a ‘Halloween 3.’   You know what Sean Connery says about saying “never”?   Actually, I don’t think he says anything.   He just slaps people, both men and women, then plays a round of golf.

I digress.   ‘Halloween II’ is set for release on August 28th.

‘Command Performance’ Trailer Rocks

command performance

“Watch the hair, dude!”

If there’s anything more kickass than watching Dolph Lundgren ride a motorcycle, it’s watching him rock out behind the drum set. If there’s anything more kickass than watching him destroy a set of skins, it’s watching him take down a group of terrorists who interrupt his concert. Don’t they know any better. Silly terrorists.

The trailer for ‘Command Performance’ is live.  It’s the latest action epic starring and directed by Lundgren.  I guess this is the straight-to-DVD equivalent to red-band, so be forewarned.  Dolph’s got a potty mouth.

Check it:

Also, just for your viewing pleasures is the teaser for the film, which shows just how much cooler Dolph is than Lars. It’s not hard, I know, but he demolishes the guy.

Dying is easy.  Rock N Roll is hard.

‘Command Performance’ hits DVD shelves on November 3rd, 2009.
