“Semi-Pro” tops the chart, but is a Full-on Flop! It may not seem as such considering it is the “#1 Movie in the Country” right now, I know. However, Will Ferrell’s newest vehicle which cost $57 Million to make, took in the shockingly low three day total of a little over $15 Million. This R-rated venture was one of the final projects from New Line Cinema and seemed to be heavily effected by that R-rating. Ferrell’s hits in previous years “Blades of Glory” (2007) and “Talladega Nights: Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006), which scored $118 & $148 Million respectively, were both PG-13 flicks, and obviously did very well. It could also be a case of ressurecting virtually the same character one too many times.

“Semi-Pro” barely dethrones last weeks King, the Dennis Quaid Thriller “Vantage Point” which steps down to the second slot. “The Spiderwick Chronicles” also dropped a spot as Fox’s “Jumper” fell behind the Sony release “The Other Boleyn Girl”. In a personal surprise “Step Up 2: The Streets” is still doing well with a tally of nearly $6 Million this week and nearing the $50 million mark. “Fool’s Gold” by Warner Bros. with the pairing of Kate Hudson, and Matthew McConaughey falls two spots as well to #7. It seems as though winning an Oscar has revived the Coen brothers “No Country for Old Men”, as it has jumped four slots since last week. Christina Ricci, Reese Witherspoon team in “Penelope”, and Ryan Reynolds’ “Definately, Maybe” enjoys the #10 position atleast until next week. Honorable mention should go to “Juno” takes #11 in it’s 13th week of release, and “There Will Be Blood” holds #15 @ 10 weeks of release.

With Jason Statham in “The Bank Job”, and our newest Epic treat “10,000 B.C.” opening this weekend things will get interesting in the “Battle of the Box Office”!

Greatest out of work actor of the day: Alex Winter, esq!

Alex Winter, Esq

He is a man known globally by one name, Bill S. Preston, Esquire!  Who though, is the man behind one half of the power group, Wyld Stallyns ! Alex Winter was the son of two modern dancers, and was trained extensively in dance. Born in London, England in 1965, before moving to St. Louis, Missouri at the age of five. His Father ran Mid-American Dance Company, and Mother taught dance at Webster University. Alex made his B&T Movie PosterBroadway debut in “The King and I“, followed by supporting roles in the production’s of “Peter Pan“, The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up“, and “Close of Play” all before graduating film school. Upon graduating New York University Alex landed his first feature film role in the  Charles Bronson vigilante  film series with “Death Wish 3” (1985),  following up   as a vampire thug in “The Lost Boys” (1987). Though, it would still be two more  years until he found his place in history. Co-Starring with Keanu Reeves, and George Carlin “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989) was a pop-culture sensation making “Party On” & “Bogus” household terms. (Not  Wayne’s World) Which was followed by a lesser sequel “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey“(1991), and two  nominally successful series`. Winter  then teamed with longtime friends  Tom Stern, and Tim Burns on an MTV project entitled “The Idiot Box” which was a hit, but due to budget issues couldn’t be  ironed out to make it happen. The three landed a $12 Million dollar deal with 20th. Century Fox to finance “Freaked” (1993).  Alex Winter   would then disappear for six years until emerging once again with his Self-Written, and Directed film, released by Lionsgate Films,  “Fever” (1999) which received much acclaim. Then, Alex Winter seemingly vanished again for another eight years before a small part on the series  “Bones” (2007), and  voiced  the role of King Mole Man in the animated series,  “Saul of the Mole Men” (2007).  Where has he been? It seems Alex  has been content behind the camera as a Writer/Director for  Commercials, and Advertisements. He is currently working on “We’re Here to Help“  Starring, Alan Rickman (Harry Potter(s), Dogma). IMDB had this on “We’re Here to Help“, A slick and ambitious pharmaceutical executive is sent on a hopeless humanitarian mission deep into a war-torn African nation, but he soon finds that he is grossly unprepared for the absurd situation that awaits him. Sounds intriguing.  Well, Party ON, and BE EXCELLENT to each other.

The Writers Strike is Officially Over

Source: WGA, AMPTP

February 13, 2008

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced its members have voted to end the strike:The membership of the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) today voted overwhelmingly in favor of lifting the restraining order and ending their 100-day strike that began on Nov. 5. 3,775 writers turned out in Los Angeles and New York to cast ballots or fax in proxies, with 92.5% voting in favor of ending the work stoppage.”The strike is over. Our membership has voted, and writers can go back to work,” said Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America, West…. “This was not a strike we wanted, but one we had to conduct in order to win jurisdiction and establish appropriate residuals for writing in new media and on the Internet. Those advances now give us a foothold in the digital age. Rather than being shut out of the future of content creation and delivery, writers will lead the way as TV migrates to the Internet and platforms for new media are developed.”

The success of this strike is a significant achievement not only for ourselves but the entire creative community, now and in the future,” said Michael Winship, president of the Writers Guild of America, East. “The commitment and solidarity of our members made it happen and have been an inspiration not only to us but the entire organized labor movement. We will build on that energy and unity to make our two unions stronger than ever.”

WGAW and WGAE members will next vote to ratify the tentative three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The membership ratification vote will be conducted by mail and also at membership meetings on February 25, 2008.

The Alliance of Motion Pictures and Producers (AMPTP) also made the following joint statement:

This is a day of relief and optimism for everyone in the entertainment industry. We can now all get back to work, with the assurance that we have concluded two groundbreaking labor agreements — with our directors and our writers — that establish a partnership through which our business can grow and prosper in the new digital age. The strike has been extraordinarily difficult for all of us, but the hardest hit of all have been the many thousands of businesses, workers and families that are economically dependent on our industry. We hope now to focus our collective efforts on what this industry does best – writers, directors, actors, production crews, and entertainment companies working together to deliver great content to our worldwide audiences.Peter Chernin, Chairman and CEO, the Fox Group
Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO, Paramount Pictures Corp.
Robert A. Iger, President & CEO, The Walt Disney Company
Michael Lynton, Chairman & CEO, Sony Pictures Entertainment
Barry M. Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros.
Leslie Moonves, President & CEO, CBS Corp.
Harry Sloan, Chairman & CEO, MGM
Jeff Zucker, President & CEO, NBC Universal

From Associated Press:

A devastating, three-month walkout that brought the entertainment industry to a standstill ended Tuesday when Hollywood writers voted to lift their union’s strike order and return to work Wednesday.

The move allows some TV series to return this spring with a handful of new episodes. It also clears the way for the Academy Awards to be staged on Feb. 24 without the threat of pickets or a boycott by actors that would have dulled the glamour of Hollywood’s signature celebration.

“At the end of the day, everybody won. It was a fair deal and one that the companies can live with, and it recognizes the large contribution that writers have made to the industry,” Leslie Moonves, chief executive officer of CBS Corp., told The Associated Press.

Moonves was among the media executives who helped broker a deal after negotiations between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents studios, collapsed in acrimony in December.

Residuals for TV shows and movies distributed online was the most contentious issue in the bitter dispute involving the 12,000-member union and the world’s largest media companies and other producers.

Under a tentative contract approved Sunday by the union’s board of directors, writers would get a maximum flat fee of about $1,200 for streamed programs in the deal’s first two years and then get 2 percent of a distributor’s gross in year three — a key union demand.

Other provisions include increased residual payments for downloaded movies and TV programs.

“These advances now give us a foothold in the digital age,” said Patric Verrone, president of the guild’s West Coast chapter. “Rather than being shut out of the future of content creation and delivery, writers will lead the way as television migrates to the Internet.”

Writers who voted in New York and Beverly Hills were overwhelmingly in favor of ending the strike: 3,492 voted yes, with only 283 voting to stay off the job.

Most writers were happy about the outcome and eager to return to work.

“It will be all hands on deck for the writing staff,” said Chris Mundy, co-executive producer of CBS’ drama “Criminal Minds.” He hopes to get a couple of scripts in the pipeline right away, with about seven episodes airing by the end of May.

Not all shows will get back on the air. Networks might not resume production of low-rated programs that have a questionable future.

Writers did not vote on whether to formally accept the tentative deal, which was reached after a Feb. 1 breakthrough between union negotiators and studio executives.

The guild will mail contract ratification ballots to members over the next few days. Writers can also vote at meetings. All ballots must be cast by Feb. 25.

The walkout stopped work on dozens of TV shows, disrupted movie production and turned the usually star-studded Golden Globes show into a news conference. It also dealt a severe financial blow to a wide range of businesses dependent on work from studios.

The strike took a $3.2 billion toll in direct and indirect costs on the economy of Los Angeles County, the home of most of the nation’s TV and film production, according to a new estimate from Jack Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp.

The last writers strike, a 153-day walkout in 1988, caused an estimated $500 million in lost wages.

The latest strike began Nov. 5, and formal negotiations broke off Dec. 7 after the guild pushed to unionize writers on reality and animated productions.

Informal talks began Jan. 23 between studio heads and the union, which extended an olive branch by withdrawing its proposal to organize reality and animated shows. It also decided against picketing the Grammy Awards.

Pressure to reach an agreement mounted after the studio alliance reached a tentative contract Jan. 17 with the Directors Guild of America. That deal also brought improved payment for content offered on the Internet.

Among the executives who took the lead in breaking the impasse were Peter Chernin, chief operating officer of News Corp., and Robert Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Co.

Michael R. Perry, a writer for “Persons Unknown” and other TV dramas, said the deal made him hopeful the guild and studios could be “partners in a growing pie” of Internet revenue.

“I want them to be fabulously, filthy rich. I just want my piece,” Perry said.

Hollywood’s labor pains may not be over, said Jonathan Handel, an entertainment attorney with the Los Angeles firm of TroyGould and a former associate counsel for the writers guild.

He pointed out that the contract between studios and the Screen Actors Guild is due to expire in June.

“The signs are mixed whether this is going to be another difficult negotiation,” Handel said. “The actors face all of the new-media issues that the writers and directors faced.”

Associated Press Writer Clare Trapasso in New York contributed to this report. Raquel Maria Dillon in Beverly Hills also contributed.

The Boys are back in town!

That’s right folks. It’s all the buzz in geekville. Corey Haim is officially back on for the long rumored, somewhat anticipated sequel to the wildly popular 1987 Joel Schumacher directed namesake  “The Lost Boys“. After news of coming over the wire of  Warner doing additional filming for this straight to DVD venture, we have learned the filming was to reinstate all of Corey Haim’s previously disgaurded scene’s as the original film’s lead character, Sam Emerson. With Jamison Newlander, and ofcoarse Corey Feldman also returning this is shaping up to be an ACTUAL sequel.  Sutherland is also  involved in the film, “but he died in the first one”  it’s not Kiefer. Instead, his half-brother Angus Sutherland will star as a vampire in this one.

The full synopsis from IMDB.com reads: The sequel to the 1987 cult hit The Lost Boys takes us to the shady surf city of Luna Bay, California, where vampires quickly dispatch anyone who crosses their path. Into this dark world arrive Chris Emerson (Hilgenbrink) and his younger sister, Nicole (Reeser). Having just lost their parents in a car accident, the siblings move in with their eccentric Aunt Jillian and become new prey for the locals way of life. When Nicole unwittingly falls for a local vampire, Chris must locate and destroy the gangs lifeline before his sisters transformation is complete; to do this Chris finds himself relying on the expertise of none other than Edgar Frog (Feldman). Subtle references to characters from the original film, and cameos from returning actors offer homage to the Lost Boys legend and set a sinister tone of impending doom.

All the feedback that I’ve heard has been positive, and now with the news of Haim re-joining the cast, I for one will be grabbing a copy to put next to the original. Could be surprisingly good, although I could be wrong. There are also talks of a Lost Boys 3 underway, and a second season of the A&E reality show “The Two Coreys” which is said to be darker, and edgier than the previous fare. As apparently the friendship broke down as the first season ended. This could mean a “Simple Life” type of seperate filming may be what we see happen in this case.  There could be some promotional tie-in possiblities either way.

Greatest out of work actor of the day: Joe Pesci

Okay, okay, okay…

Joe Pesci, who  first really  hit the radar for his award-winning supporting performance  in Raging Bull(1980), had what seemed to be alot of steam in the late-80’s through the 90’s with  mid-level roles in films such as Lethal Weapon(2-4), Casino, JFK, My Cousin Vinny,  Home Alone(1&2), and  some of his  most notable  work in Goodfellas, which gave  him an Oscar.  Joe Pesci, 65, after completing Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998 went MIA to the movie world until resurfacing in Robert De Niro directed  The Good Shepherd(2006) Starring: De Niro, Matt Damon, and Angelina Jolie.

Not much is known about one our favorite wiseguys’ eight year  sabbatical. However, this is an interview from 1991: “I had a lot of trouble getting work for a long time. People were afraid of me because I was the kind of person who told them to go fuck themselves. And they don’t want anyone to offer any resistance. After ‘Raging Bull,’ they wanted me to play neighborhood-type Italian stupes. And I didn’t want to play that. And people just come at you from all angles, just ripping at you and clawing at you to get a piece of your success. I made a few pictures. But they were so few and far between that I always used the money and burnt it up and was always broke and borrowing money. I played golf every day to keep my sanity. I couldn’t get an agent. I couldn’t get a job. My methods of working were nowhere to everyone. Whatever I did as an actor, nobody seemed to appreciate. And then all of a sudden, everybody appreciated it. It’s very strange to me.”Joe Pesci in New York, March 4, 1991.

The Filming for Love Ranch(2009) has begun. In this Taylor Hackford(Ray)Directed story based on the INFAMOUS “Bunny Ranch” in Nevada. Pesci is Charlie Botempo, Husband to Grace played by Helen Mirren(The Queen) as they open the first legal brothel. Scout Taylor-Compton(Halloween)& Taryn  Manning(Hustle & Flow) will I’m sure be good eye candy in this one. Joe Pesci isn’t done yet. Okay, okay…but I am.

By the POWER of GRAYSKULL !!

With a renewed interest in all things comic book, and these films  making a huge splash at the box office… What could be brewing for us die-hard movie-goers, and lovers of the fantastic?

MOTU_Logo

Masters of the Universe (2009)

The tagline reads “Only one can have the Power…” with the outline that on IMDB.com says, “He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, goes against the evil Skeletor to save the planet Eternia and protect the secrets of Castle Grayskull.” What could we be in store for? Rumor has it this version of one of  my favorite  80’s icons  will be filmed in the same style, and cinematography as 300, which gives us something to seriously look forward to. Eternia, He-Man, and the rest of the cast of Characters that created the Masters of the Universe, in my opinion, could only truely be brought to the big screen as a live-action feature with the talent, abilities, and technology of our modern day filmmakers. Joel Silver has been rumored to be attached to produce this. As some of you may know other films that  Silver is accredited with…Die Hard 1&2, Predator 1&2, Road House, Weird Science, Leathal Weapon 1-4, Matrix 1-3, and numerous other SMASH HITS. Though, he also brought us Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie, but I won’t hold that against him much. Justin Marks is coming forth to write. His most notable work to date…Well, not much, however  he’s also writing “Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Lee”. We can only hope Marks is an avid watcher of the cartoon, and huge fan of the franchise. Even if the dialogue is limited, I’m sure the visuals will be nothing short of stunning. I’m looking forward to a fantastic  visual masterpiece ! Setting myself up for a let down? Could be.

Lionsgate/Marvel reach terms with WGA!!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Film and television studio Lionsgate on Thursday said it reached an interim agreement with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) enabling striking Hollywood writers to work on its projects. Comic-book-hero movie company Marvel Studios, a unit of Marvel Entertainment Inc., and the guild also said they had reached an agreement.

Writers and producers resumed talks this week aimed at ending a nearly three-month strike that has stopped most prime-time television production, and some hope smaller deals put pressure on the big studios.

Writers already have reached interim deals with studios including United Artists, the film production house backed by Tom Cruise, and The Weinstein Co., run by media-mogul brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein.

Representatives of the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) went back to the table for informal talks this week for the first time since their contract talks collapsed on December 7.

The “informal discussions” are aimed at laying the groundwork for official bargaining to resume.

“The writers’ issue seems on its way to being solved, and Lionsgate felt it was an important time, particularly in view of our TV series, to have our writer partners get back to work,” Lionsgate said in a statement. “We look forward to a broad industry agreement soon,” the company said.

Upcoming Lionsgate films include “Rambo,” “The Eye” and “Saw 5,” while its television series include “Weeds,” “Mad Men” and a new show, “Fear Itself.”

DIRECTORS’ MODEL

The AMPTP’s recent labor pact with Hollywood directors is expected to be a centerpiece of the informal talks with the

WGA.

The directors’ deal contains several key provisions to pay union members more for work distributed over the Internet, the chief sticking point in the studios’ dispute with writers.

Some 10,500 writers represented by the union went on strike against major film and TV studios on November 5, throwing the television industry into disarray, disrupting various film projects and casting a shadow over Hollywood‘s awards season.

Formal contract talks between the two sides broke down December 7, and the union began pursuing separate talks with smaller, independent production companies.

In a statement, the WGA said on Thursday that the Lionsgate deal was similar to interim deals reached recently with other independent film and television companies.

“We are pleased Lionsgate has joined the growing number of companies that have signed interim agreements with the Writers Guild,” said Patric Verrone, president of WGA West, and Michael Winship, president of the WGA East, in a joint statement.

The WGA reached its first interim deal with Worldwide Pants, the production company owned by late-night TV host David Letterman, that allowed his show and another one produced by his firm, “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” to return to the air during the strike with writing teams intact.

The WGA said it also has reached deals with Spyglass Entertainment, MRC, Jackson Bites, Mandate Films, and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.

Cloverfield Monster Exposed?! Or Not…

The massive viral campaign that has been surging since the “1-18-08″”Cloverfield” Teaser Trailer during the long awaited debut of “The Transformers” hit the big-screen, and kicked off. Complete with gag orders, and fake websites… This movie has thus-far been the most Top Secret, and much discussed project in recent years. Well, we here at WAMG have been on the hunt for the latest news regarding the “Secret Cloverfield Monster”! I have found numerous pictures of what COULD BE the newest addition to the American Monster Movie genre`.

Peter Konig has worked on over 30 feature films and contributed to over 50 next-generation video game titles. He has spent his career sculpting, designing, concepting, animating and art directing. He has played key roles in many film projects such as Dragonheart (Tippett Oscar nomination), Starship Troopers (Tippett Oscar nomination), Evolution, and Blade II among many others. Pete recently created another dragon design for the just released film “Enchanted”. Peter now live in Oakland, CA., and is Tippett’s art director for the upcoming, top secret JJ Abrahms production “Cloverfield”. So, I hunted down some of his work…

Or Could it look like this?:

I personally would be content if they didn’t show the baddie AT ALL. Leave it to our imagination. I thought Jeepers Creepers had potential to be the next great American “Monster Movie”, then they showed the creature in all it’s mini-Predator, Super-Bat glory. Although, J.J. Abrahms has stated we will have a face to face meeting with our Destroyer I’m hoping for it to be able to live up to the hype. With so many questions revolving around this much-talked-about film, the only thing we know for sure is that we will all find out together on 1-18-08 !!

Early Oscar buzz…

Righteous Kill

An Independent production filmed for $60 million, is Aiming for a Summer 2008 release. This Jon Avnet(Fried Green Tomatoes)Directed Crime/Drama is shaping up to be what looks on paper, a strong awards-season contender. Writen by Russell Gewirtz (Inside Man(2)) Righteous kill boasts an ALL STAR(`cept 50 Cent)CAST of Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese(Acting), Donnie Wahlberg, John Leguizamo, 50 Cent, Brian Dennehy, and MORE! After 8 collaborations, Martin Scorsese, and De Niro hadn’t worked together since Casino (1995). I wouldn’t have thought that their next project would have been in front of the camera. Pacino and De Niro are teaming again for the first time since “Heat”, and second time in history as Two Veteran New York City Detectives on the hunt for a poem-writing vigilante who may very-well be one of their own. Could this be a serious hopeful for a golden statue?

The Changeling

Hitting theaters Nov. 7th 2008 this Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River)Mystery/Drama which was Writen by J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, World War Z(Screenplay)), and stars Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and more. Jolie plays a woman whose son is abducted but retrieved; she suspects, however, that the returned child is not hers. The woman must then confront corruption in the LAPD.

“The film is based upon an infamous kidnapping and murder case that occurred in Los Angeles. Gordon Northcott kidnapped, molested, killed and dismembered a number of boys in 1928. He coerced his mother, Louisa Northcott, into killing Walter Collins. She admitted the murder of Walter Collins and was sentenced to life in prison. She was sent to San Quentin.

On In February, 1929, after the trial of 27 days, Northcott was found guilty of killing Lewis Winslow, 12, and his brother, Nelson Winslow, 10, and an unidentified Mexican boy. February, 1929, Judge Freeman sentenced Northcott to be hanged. The sentence was carried out 2 October 1930.

The Los Angeles police was also involved in a scandal as a result of this case. Arthur Hutchens, Jr., who was a runaway from Illinois, claimed he was the missing Walter Collins, so he could get a free trip to California. Los Angeles police considered the case closed and tried to convince Walters mother, Christine Collins that Arthur Hutchens, Jr. was her son. When she refused to believe this was her son, she was placed in an insane asylum. Only after Arthur Hutchens admitted he was not Christine Collins’ son was Christine released.” (From: Wikipedia)

Ron Howard was originally slated to direct before turning the helm over to Eastwood. Howard stayed aboard as a producer alongside Brian Grazer(The DaVinci Code). This movie should be a FAVORITE in the oscar race!

DOOMSDAY !!

No, not the unstoppable maniac that killed Superman. I’m talking about the Universal Pictures film Written, and Directed by Neil Marshall(The Decent). Doomsday seems to be a mixture of Escape from New York, 28 weeks later, and Mad Max. Scotland, along with some of England has been overtaken by a plague known as the “Reaper Virus”. The contaminated area was walled off, and left to it’s on devices. 25 years later…The “Reaper Virus” has gotten past the wall, and the powers that be are forced to do something, anything. Led by Major Eden Sinclair(Rhona Mitra: Skinwalkers, Number 23) an Elite team is sent into the “Hot Zone”. In a land that is a living hell, they’re challenged with the task of retrieving a cure that can save all mankind, and get out with their lives. Malcolm Mcdowell is usually brilliant, I’m hoping he’s in a villianous role. Bob Hoskins(Mario) Always makes me smile. Here’s an exerpt from Neil Marshalls’ Myspace “One of the things I was adamant about doing with Doomsday was going back to a kind of gritty stunt/action movie that doesn’t get made anymore. Real people, in a real world, doing really REALLY dangerous stuff! No green screen, no wires, just crazy stunties standing on, jumping into, and hanging out of cars travelling at 80mph and smashing into each other!” This should be a great ride to look foward to!

You can check out this films’ official site @ www.doomsdayiscoming.com !
