New Pictures from ‘The Hurt Locker’

hurtlocker2

Despite the fact there seems to have been a small wave of Iraq war films recently, some of them have been good and ‘The Hurt Locker’, Kathryn Bigelow’s newest, is the next war film of this topic to hit theaters.

There’s been a lot of positive buzz on this movie already, playing on the festival circuit. Apparently this movie’s got some massive intensity. ‘The Hurt Locker’ is currently a top draw at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Chances are, you may soon be seeing a review from one of our Movie Geeks who are there, as we speak.

Check out a couple more photos from the movie below and get ready for the pain in ‘The Hurt Locker’ coming to theaters on June 26, 2009.

SXSW Review: ‘Countertransference’

countertransference

‘Countertransference’ is an odd little movie. This 15-minute short comedy by director Madeleine Olnek could perhaps be described as a ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ type of experience, except instead of Larry David playing a bald, neurotic jerk, we witness Deb Margolin playing Cathy, a homely woman with a dead-end career and no respect. When Cathy isn’t working in a second-hand, over-priced thrift shop paid solely on commission (even though no one buys anything) for a terribly inconsiderate boss, she attends sessions with the world’s least effective therapist, played by Susan Ziegler.

To say that Cathy’s therapist is the worst would be to make a grave understatement. After watching the movie, you’ll wonder who was actually needing therapy… Cathy or her therapist. All Cathy wants is a little respect and the ability to command her own life, but struggles with confrontation and is unable to speak her mind. During her various sessions with her therapist, she does manage to make a few minor unintentional breakthroughs of her own, as a result of the often demeaning, disrespectful and altogether excessively aggressive tactics of her therapist.

‘Countertransference’ has some interesting shots and some uniquely humorous moments of the type that makes you sort of uncomfortable and squirm a little in your seat. When I say the movie is odd, I simply mean that the point of the story isn’t entirely clear at first. The movie can be awkward to the point of disbelief at times, but stick with it and it pays off fairly well at the end, as Cathy ultimately brings herself to take a relatively small step, but a step all the same in the right direction.

Dante’s Inferno game going to the Big Screen

dantesinferno

Universal Pictures is developing a live-action adaptation of the Electronic Arts video game called Dante’s Inferno for the big screen. Dan Harris (X-Men 2, Superman Returns) has been chosen to write the script, with Mark Abraham and Eric Newman of Strike Entertainment producing.

Dante’s Inferno was the subject of a heated bidding war for film rights between four major studios before the game even had a title. Universal walked away with the goods. The game has players embark on a horrifying journey through the many levels, or circles, of Hell.

New Poster for ‘Where the Wild Things Are’

wherethewildthingsareposter

Check out the new poster for Spike Jonze’s long-awaited adaptation of the classic children’s fantasy book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. I have been eagerly following this movie for a long time, through all it’s ups and many downs, it’s struggles with the studio and everything else, but it’s finally making it’s way to theaters on October 19, 2009.

I really like this poster. It’s not the usual boring stock where 2-3 photos are Photoshopped together with some boring typeface. No, it’s original and evocative of the book, gives us a glimpse of what’s to come but also maintains an element of mystery, allowing for younger audiences to be intrigued as well as older, more familiar audiences to get excited for the movie.

As a bonus, here’s a couple of images from the movie you may or may not have seen already:

Natalie Portman in ‘Thor’… Hmm, I dunno?

natalieportmanthor

You may want to consider sporting your B.S. protective visor for this one because the rumors are really starting to fly. Of course, one important element crucial to something being a “rumor” is that we really don’t know if it’s true or not. Apply this rule of thumb to this bit of info with full force.

Nikki Finke states on her site that she’s “been told” that Natalie Portman is leading the casting choices for the role of the female lead in the new ‘Thor’ movie. She also mentioned the reason Hartnett is being considered for the role of Loki is based on his performance in ‘O’ (Othello).

I can buy that reasonably well, but for some reason I just have a hard time swallowing Portman in this movie, but… we’ll just have to wait and see.

‘Transformers 3’ gets a Release Date

transformers_logo

Before the sequel ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ even hits theaters, Paramount and DreamWorks have already decided to move forward with the third installment in the “revived” franchise, setting a release date of July 1, 2011.

While it seems somewhat early to be making such an announcement, the studio claims they wanted to call shotgun on the popular date before any other major movie got dibs on it. No official arrangements (that we know of) have been made with director Michael Bay, or with stars Shia LeBouf or Megan Fox at this time. In fact, there’s not even a script.

Hardwicke considering ‘Maximum Ride’

catherinehardwicke

From one pre-teen/young-adult fantasy adaptation to another, director Catherine Hardwicke is considering an offer from Sony’s Columbia Pictures to develop and direct ‘Maximum Ride’.

The five-volume series by James Patterson chronicles six teens, known as the Flock, who are genetically altered so that they are part human and part bird. Learning to fly, they escape the laboratory where they have been housed and are pursued by a pack of creatures called the Erasers that are part human and part wolf. — HR

The screenplay is being penned by Don Payne (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) and Patterson himself is serving as an executive producer. The series was popular enough to spawn a Manga version, but it’s my personal opinion that they would benefit more from a different choice at the wheel, so to speak. The “success” of ‘Twilight’ was not due to the director, but solely due to the mass following of the series of books.

Hayter & Carver join forces to become Dark Hero

watchmenrorschach1

Producer Benedict Carver (‘Bratz’, ‘Doomsday’) and writer David Hayter (‘X-Men’, ‘Watchmen’ co-writer) have teamed up to become Dark Hero Studios. The new venture will focus on developing movie, television, Internet and video game projects in the action, science fiction and horror genres.

“Many people would love to have the studio-based producer gig, but if you want to build asset value through a library, you have to be more entrepreneurial and avoid giving away a lot of rights upfront,” Carver said. “David will create, write and direct movies and TV series for the company, but he’ll also be a magnet for other writers and directors to work with us.”

The new companies first venture will be a film called ‘Demonology’. Written by Hayter, he says the idea was inspired from his experience enrolled in an international high school in Japan.

“It’s about an American kid who goes to one of these schools in Belgium, but it brings my own horrible experiences of school to life,” Hayter said. — Variety

First Image from ‘The Goon’ Feature Surfaces!

thegoonimage

OMG, I am SOOO excited about this project! (So excited that I decided to use IM Talk) After being out of the comic book scene for a while, I recently decided to re-enter the hobby on a limited basis. Believe it or not, writing for WeAreMovieGeeks is kind of time-consuming.

Anyway, I decided to find just 2-3 “newer” titles I like and simply follow those. Well, the very first one I discovered was ‘The Goon’ and goodness gracious is it a wonderful thing… assuming you’re into zombies, thugs, nasty creatures and comic book violence.

So, needless to say… I was ecstatic when I first discovered a feature adaptation was being developed. Then, learned it would be animated… good call! Then, it’s being produced by David Fincher! Holy sh**! When the poster was revealed at Comic Con, I feel further into the geek abyss of fandom. Now, the very first image from the movie has surfaced and I am such a happy movie geek!

Oh, and in case you missed it… here’s the poster again:
