Review: ‘Dead Snow’

deadsnowmovie1

Right up front I’ll tell you that ‘Dead Snow’ would have been twice as fun if I’d seen it in a crowd full of enthusiastic genre fans. Nonetheless, this Norwegian horror-comedy is one helluva blast. Granted, the zombies don’t fit well into the classic mold of “what a zombie should be” but that rule doesn’t really apply when the movie is played just as much for laughs as it is for scares. Most importantly, ‘Dead Snow’ is a crowd pleas-er and a bloody, corpse-cutting good time.

One thing I noticed very early in the movie is that ‘Dead Snow’ is heavily influenced by the ‘Evil Dead’ movies, both in style and it’s visual style and in it’s writing, but not so much that it overshadows ‘Dead Snow’ as it’s own movie. Of course, I am saying this despite the fact that one character named Erland is “the worlds biggest movie geek” and takes about the ‘Evil Dead’ movies early on and that one of the characters manages to stumble upon a chainsaw in a shed while fighting off zombies. Nah, I was wrong. ‘Dead Snow’ wasn’t influenced by ‘Evil Dead’ at all. In fact, considering the special effects and makeup in ‘Dead Snow’ I can state with 100% certainty that it wasn’t influenced by ‘Dead Alive’ either… but, I am full of sh**, of course.

The scene where one of the skiers first fights back against one of the zombies is hilarious and it leads into some even better and original horror-comedy creativity. So, the lesson I learned at this point was that if I’m ever chased by a zombie off the side of a snow-covered cliff, I can survive by digging in with my knife and holding on for dear life from the zombie’s intestines life a safety rope, rather than plummeting to my death hundreds of feet below. Good to know!

What more can I say about ‘Dead Snow’? This is just one of those movies you have to see and experience for yourself. Sure, there is technically a story and it included the all-important scene where a creepy old man visits the skiers cabin and warns them of an evil presence in these parts, but that’s short lived and the carnage quickly resumes. ‘Dead Snow’ comes to a climatic overture in the end during the all-out war between the skiers and the zombies, who, by the way… the zombies are Nazi soldiers from WWII. Did I mention that already?

[Overall: 4.25 stars out of 5 – Based on a scale equivalent to that used for ‘Evil Dead’ being a 5]

Bale to Duke it Out with Wahlberg in ‘The Fighter’

cbalefightermwahlbergfighter

David O. Russell is going Rocky on us, as he will be directing Relativity Media’s new movie ‘The Fighter’ to be distributed by Paramount, which is expected to begin shooting this July.

The movie tells the story of “Irish” Mickey Ward, a fighter from Boston who was helped by his half-brother Dicky Eklund to the world lightweight championship. Eklund (Bale) is remembered for his career prior to drugs and crime, when he went toe to toe with Sugar Ray Leonard, and then afterwards when he trained Ward (Wahlberg) Rocky-style.

I have to admit, I would have rather seen Arronofsky direct this, but due to the long-running issues with getting the project off the ground, Arronofsky backed out and moved on. However, that’s not to say Russell isn’t a capable director. The project has also gone through it’s share of actors, including Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, before steeling on what looks to be Bale and Wahlberg, although they are apparently still negotiating.

One thing’s for sure, filming in a boxing frame of mind, Wahlberg shouldn’t do anything to “piss” Bale off or they may find themselves in real-life fisticuffs as a result of Bale’s temper.

WAMG First Look at ‘The Limits of Control’

limitsofcontrolpic03

Back in February, we informed you of some great casting news for director Jim Jarmusch’s next project called ‘The Limits of Control’ which is now well under way. Jarmusch (Dead Man) is probably most widely known for his last film ‘Broken Blowers’ which also starred Bill Murray. For those of you unfamiliar with Jarmusch’s work, ‘The Limits of Control’ looks to be a return to the type of filmmaking he pursued with ‘Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai’. Before you watch the trailer and write this off as a ‘No Country for Old Men’ rip off, let me assure you that’s a misguided assumption. Jarmusch is a legitimate and very talented, highly influential indie filmmaker and this movie looks to be very cool.

‘The Limits of Control’ tells the story of a mysterious loner (Isaach De Bankolà ©) who…

…is in the process of completing a job, yet he trusts no one, and his objectives are not initially divulged. His journey, paradoxically both intently focused and dreamlike, takes him not only across Spain but also through his own consciousness. — Focus Features

‘The Limits of Control’ stars Bill Murray,  Isaach De Bankolà ©, Gael Garcà a Bernal, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt and Paz de la Huerta. The movie is scheduled for a limited U.S. release in theaters on May 1, 2009.

For those of you familiar with director peter Jackson’s pre-Middle Earth period and have seen his ‘Heavenly Creatures’ then you know what potential his new adaptation of Alice Sebold’s best-selling novel ‘Lovely Bones’ will likely hold.

Shown above is the first still released from the movie which is about a young girl who is murdered and watches over her family and her killer from Heaven as she struggles to balance her need for revenge versus her desire to help her family heal from their loss.

The film, which has had more than it’s shares of trials and tribulations during production, is set to hit theaters on December 11, 2009.

Russell Crowe revealed as ‘Robin Hood’

Here it is, folks. Your first look at Russell Crowe, I mean Gladiator, ahh… I mean Robin Hood. Crowe will be taking his turn as the generous thief who steals from the rich and gives to the poor in Ridley Scott’s new film about the legend.

Personally, Crowe not only looks like Crowe but he’s got the whole Gladiator hair style going on and he’s likely to be Crowe as Robin Hood, just as he was Crowe as Maximus, etc. For me, I think it’s going to be tough for Crowe to even match, let alone surpass, Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, despite how good Scott’s overall film ends up being.

Review: ‘State of Play’

stateofplay1

Let me begin by saying that ‘State of Play’ is a terrible title. It doesn’t really tell us anything other than what we already know, which is that this movie is a political thriller, and only fails miserably at attempting to induce any sort of intrigue in the story by way of suggesting a double meaning. With that off my chest, what I can tell you is that ‘State of Play’ is not a terrible movie. That is to say it’s not perfect either.

‘State of Play’ was directed by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) and was co-written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom) and Tony Gilroy (Bourne trilogy, Michael Clayton). Suffice it to say that these three talented individuals working together was unlikely to produce anything less than entertaining, which is for lack of better terminology, the best way to describe this movie, despite it’s relatively non-descript usefulness. It’s also worth mentioning that the film is based on BBC television series that lasted for one season in 2003.

Russell Crowe plays an “old dog” newspaper reporter named Cal McAffrey who stumbles upon a major story while investigating what appears to be just another drug-related shooting. Cal soon discovers some evidence that the two stories and much more are all connected to one big political-corporate conspiracy that somehow involves his former college roommate and friend, Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck). During his research on the story, Cal is assisted by an eager, yet skeptical young blogger for the Washington Post named Della Frye (Rachel McAdams) and persistently ball-busted by his editor, played with old school, sharp-tongued wit by Helen Mirren.

The story itself is engaging enough and the plot has enough twist and misdirection to keep the audience guessing to a point. ‘State of Play’ benefits from solid writing and even more confident dialogue. The movie knows when to be serious, but more importantly it knows when to ease off of the serious stuff and allow for a bit of low-key, realistic comic relief that is presented well through the characters’ personalities. Solid supporting performances of smaller portions are given by Jeff Daniels, who plays Rep. George Fergus, and most of all Jason Bateman, who gives a memorable performance as Dominic Foy, owner of a successful PR firm. Bateman delivers what is probably the most accomplished acting in the film, save maybe Helen Mirren, displaying the widest and most believable range of emotions and character development within the shortest amount of screen time.

On the down side of the film, ‘State of Play’ falls short in two key areas. First, and I know it’s popular to bash Ben Affleck so I’ll emphasize this isn’t a direct bashing of the man himself… but, Affleck was not well cast in this role. He did an acceptable job within his capabilities, but there’s something about his appearance combined with his portrayal of the character that doesn’t fit. It seems too perfect, that is, perfect to the point of being imperfect. His character never convincingly develops any believable flaws and fails to sell us on the idea that he’s the “perfect politician” resulting in my once again watching his on camera and not being able to separate the actor from the role.

‘State of Play’ as a whole is well worth seeing if you enjoy these kinds of political thrillers, save the ending which to most will come off as either flat and anti-climactic (as is my opinion) or as mostly predictable as Jeremy stated was his opinion. Either way, I believe the film does offer enough merit in it’s entirety to satisfy most viewers and I can say it did ultimately prove more entertaining to me than I had originally predicted.

[Overall: 3.5 stars out of 5]

Sofia Coppola returns to ‘Somewhere’

sofiacoppola

Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), one of my favorite young and talented directors, is returning to work with her new film called ‘Somewhere’ which she wrote and will direct. The movie will be set at the iconic Chateau Marmont in Hollywood.

Focus Features is producing the film, which is a dramedy that tells the story of a young actor living at the Chateau Marmont when his 11-year old daughter visits him unexpectedly, causing him to reflect on how he lives his life.

‘Somewhere’ will star Brad Dorff and Elle Fanning. The movie is a sort of family project, as Sofia will also produce with brother Roman through American Zoetrope, and father Francis Ford Coppola will also executive produce.

‘Star Trek’ will be Plastered Everywhere!

startrekimage

The newest installment in the ‘Star Trek’ franchise is on it’s way, thanks to sci-fi fanboy and producer/director J.J. Abrams. Just in case no one has heard about the new movie, a massive marketing campaign is under way to ensure not a single person ends up asking “wait, there is a new Star Trek movie?”

You’ve already seen the trailers and TV commercials, but keep an eye out for Star Trek to appear on virtually every facet of you daily life. An estimated $50 million marketing partnership will be unveiled featuring some well-known advertising icons that have been Trekked Out.

Included in these icons are Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger, Burger King’s freaky King mascot and Erin from Esurance, all of whom will appear in Star Trek themes advertising. Tony the Tiger, for example, will be throwing up “Live Long and Prosper” signs and Kelloggs will be placing beam-up badges into boxes of cereal, including Apple Jacks and Fruit Loops. There’s even going to be limited edition boxes of cereal containing Starfleet insignia-shaped marshmallows. Good luck getting your hands on these however, as I predict Trekkies will be buying them in droves, never to be opened.

Burger King, along with cellular giants Verizon and Nokia, have shot commercials and are using actual sets and crew members from the movie. Burger King will obviously be venturing into marketing territory in it’s restaurants with movie-themed cups, toys and kid’s meals. Esurance will sponsor a ‘Star Trek’ movie night at AT&T Park for a San Fransisco Giants game as well as other sporting events.

Who knows what else will pop up? Kelloggs is going to be one of the most visible partners. They are also planning in-store displays of movie-themed packages for popular items including Pop Tarts, Eggo Waffles, Cheez-Its and Keebler Cookies, featuring sweepstakes, swag giveaways and movie ticket offers.

So, prepare yourself for Trek-overdose as we venture closer to it’s release in theaters on May 7/8, 2009. I’ve already predicted that ‘Star Trek’ will be the biggest grossing movie of the summer and it appears Paramount and their marketing partners are banking on that.
