Ang Lee to Helm a Woodstock Movie

Focus Features will begin production late this month on “Taking Woodstock,” scripted by James Schamus and to be directed by Ang Lee (Hulk, Brokeback Mountain). Lee’s ensemble cast includes Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) and Liev Schrieber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

Pic is an adaptation of the memoir of Elliot Tiber, who played a role in helping the historic 1969 music festival unfold on his neighbor’s farm.

Less than a month ago, Focus had been thinking about postponing the start of production over concerns that a possible Screen Actors Guild strike could force a shutdown later this year. But numerous studios have begun to move forward on feature starts, and it’s understood that Focus has worked out contingency plans in the event of a work stoppage.

Demetri Martin (“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart”) had already been set to play Tiber, an aspiring interior designer in Greenwich Village obliged to run the family business, a Catskills motel. In summer 1969, he found himself at the center of a generation-defining experience when he volunteered the motel to be the home base for Woodstock concert organizers after his neighbor, Max Yasgur, made his farm available for the event.

Staunton and Henry Goodman will play Tiber’s parents, and Jonathan Groff (currently starring in the Shakespeare in the Park production of “Hair” in Gotham) will play Woodstock organizer Michael Lang; Hirsch will play a recently returned Vietnam vet, Eugene Levy (American Pie) will play Yasgur, and Schreiber is in talks to play a transvestite named Vilma.

Jeffery Dean Morgan (Watchmen) is set as a closeted married man having an affair with Tiber, while Paul Dano (The Will Be Blood) and Zoe Kazan play a hippie couple attending the concert. Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury) will play a local theater troupe head, and Mamie Gummer will play Lang’s assistant.

De Niro Joins Gibson in ‘Edge of Darkness’

My favorite actor Robert De Niro is closing in on a deal to join Mel Gibson in “Edge of Darkness” to be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale). Shooting begins this month in Massachusetts.
Gibson stars as Thomas Craven, a straitlaced homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and single father, whose 24-year old daughter is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop assumes he was the target, but his investigation leads in another direction and uncovers his daughter’s secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion. De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence.

Pic marks the first film that Gibson has top-lined since “Signs” and “We Were Soldiers” in 2002. Scripted by William Monahan (The Departed), the drama is an adaptation of a 1985 BAFTA-winning six-hour BBC miniseries that Campbell also directed.

Even though De Niro has been in a few crappy films in the past few years, he will hit it big again with ‘Righteous Kill’ and ‘What Just Happened’. Be on the lookout for these films later on this year!

New ‘Battle in Seattle’ Poster

A brand new poster for the upcoming “Battle in Seattle” movie has been released, showing a shot of Michelle Rodriguez being dragged away by the police during the riots. In the movie, activists arrive in Seattle, Washington to protest a meeting of the World Trade Organization. Riots and chaos ensue as demonstrators successfully stop the WTO meetings.
“Battle in Seattle” is written and directed by Stuart Townsend, who is making his helming debut. You may know Townsend as an actor; he has appeared in such movies as “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” “Queen of the Damned” and “Trapped.” His new movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 19th, in limited release.

Cage and Carpenter team-up for ‘Scared Straight’

Snagged this bit from The Hollywood Reporter:

Nicolas Cage and director John Carpenter are in final negotiations to team up for a prison thriller titled Scared Straight, says The Hollywood Reporter.Nu Image/Millennium Films would finance the film and is in negotiations with Contrafilm’s Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson along with Randall Emmett and George Furla to produce. Avi Lerner also would produce.

“Straight” follows a troubled youth who’s sent to prison off the Scared Straight crime-prevention program, which imprisons delinquent teens for a short period in the hopes of deterring them from a life of crime. While the teen is there, a riot breaks out and the prisoners take him hostage. A lifer, played by Cage, is forced to help the young man out.

Joe Gazzam wrote the original spec script, which was rewritten by Ron Brinkerhoff. Noah Rosen is executive producing as is Rob Cohen, who was attached to direct at one point. An October start is being eyed.

I’m kinda getting sick of Nick Cage now… I MEAN VERY SICK!

‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off Will Focus on ‘Venom’

Sony is moving forward with “Venom,” a potential “Spider-Man” spin-off based on the comic book villain. The studio is developing the project, and is hoping the character could serve as an antidote to the aging “Spider-Man” franchise in the way that Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its “X-Men” franchise.

But getting any spin-off off the ground, let alone one centered on a villain, can be tricky. The studio had commissioned a draft of the script from Jacob Estes, a writer of the specialty film “Mean Creek,” released several years ago by Paramount Classics. But the studio is considering going in a different direction from Estes’ script and is seeking writers for a new draft. Casting also is no simple matter. Topher Grace played the character in the film, but agents have been eyeing the role for their clients, as Sony is not yet convinced the actor can carry a tent-pole picture. In “Spider-Man 3,” Venom is essentially a parasite that attaches itself to a host via a sticky substance that then gives the host special powers. The fact that it is a substance rather than a character could give Sony leeway to cast a new actor. “Venom” came about as part of the licensing deal between Marvel and Sony for the Spider-Man movies, which contained provisions allowing for the use of spin-offs based on other Spider-Man characters. Sony is developing a fourth “Spider-Man” film for 2011, but that picture would come out nine years after the original movie debuted, adding to the studio’s desire to see new Marvel characters.

What! Are you serious? I think they are actually bringing Topher Grace back to do this film. I know they introduced him in Spiderman 3 but Grace cannot be a leading man! I enjoyed Topher on That 70’s Show but he really needs to stay away from this project, I would think that the fans would be a little angry!

What do you guys think?

Frank Miller is a genius and I am so ready for this film! Lionsgate has partnered with nine prestigious art schools nationwide and presented nine student-designed advertising campaigns for “The Spirit.” The campaigns will be unveiled throughout the summer in the individual cities that are home to the nine schools.

“The Spirit” Art School Program launched this past weekend at the annual Comic-Con convention at San Diego, where The Art Institute of California-San Diego introduced its campaign.

‘Prince of Persia’ Details Revealed …

More news regarding Prince of Persia….

“Prince of Persia” creator Jordan Mechner appeared at San Diego Comic-Con where he discussed the upcoming “Prince of Persia” Disney movie, which is currently in development. [via IGN]

He said that the film will be based on the “Sands of Time” game, revealing that the script does not literally follow the storyline of the game. Mechner added that he does not expect any potential film sequels to be based on the subsequent games “Warrior Within” and “The Two Thrones” since they took the game’s storyline in a different direction. Nothing from either of those games, including characters, will be in the current movie.

Mechner said that adapting an interactive experience into a non-interactive one means re-conceiving the story. The challenge of the script was in writing an entirely new story than the game even if it has the same meaning, plot elements, and characters as the game. The movie has to be different because it is engineered to be played while the film is a spectator experience. Mechner wants the viewer to be taken on an emotional journey and to care about the characters so that way it’s not all just about fighting monsters and action set-pieces.

Unlike his game counterpart, the title character in the movie to be played by Jake Gyllenhaal will have a name. Mechner said that he chose the name “Dastan” for the prince because he believes its an old Persian name that means “trickster.”

Mechner wants the story to offer viewers a journey that takes them to more places than just a castle. Due to secrecy, he would not reveal what powers the prince might have in the movie or discuss key plot elements. He expects the film to be rated PG or PG-13 and for its level of violence to be along the lines of other summer blockbusters such as “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Why the heck do they have Gyllenhall playing a Persian Prince?

Director Sam Raimi spoke at the San Diego Comic-Con about a possible fourth installment in the “Evil Dead” franchise, stating that he would love to working with Bruce Campbell again. [via GeeksOfDoom]

I love working with Bruce Campbell,” said Raimi. “He’s super willing to do anything to make it right. He’s a very funny guy, but mostly he’s got this quality where he will physically do anything to get the shot done right, so I would love to work with Bruce again because I’d love to test those limits.

Finally, Raimi let fans know that they can expect another “Evil Dead” movie soon. “I’d love to make another ‘Evil Dead’ picture. And actually that’s in the wheelhouse. I’d like to work on it with my brother Ivan [Raimi] when he comes up next week.
