‘Zombieland’ Trailer hits the net!

zombieland

‘Zombieland’ has been hitting the rounds lately with news and photos.   One of the coolest news pieces is that Bill Murray will make a cameo in the film as the undead.

‘Zombieland’ is a horror-comedy (how convienent given my ‘I Heart Horror’ article about this sub-genre) that focuses on Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) & Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson).   Tallahassee is on a cross-country trek to get the world’s last Twinkie…. ok, I had to laugh about the Twinkie.   They are joined by Emma Stone (‘Superbad’) and Abigail Breslin (‘Little Miss Sunshine’).

‘Zombieland’ is written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (‘The Joe Schmo Show’) and will be released on October 9, 2009.

Bride of Frankie Goes in for a Makeover

brideoffrankieimage

The story of Frankenstein and his monster has been told many times in different ways.   So, why not just remake the sequel…

Universal and Imagine are breathing new life into “Bride of Frankenstein.” The companies are in talks with Neil Burger to write and direct their long-stirring remake of the 1935 monster movie. Burger, who would pen the script with writing partner Dirk Wittenborn, most prominently wrote and helmed “The Illusionist,” the Edward Norton magician mystery that earned nearly $40 million for Yari Film Group in 2006.

James Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein,” which starred Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as the titular bride, continued the story that began with 1931’s “Frankenstein.” A monster, on the run from an angry mob, has a series of adventures, and also persuades Dr. Frankenstein to create a mate. The doctor is successful, but the bride (who is not a central character) winds up rejecting the monster at the end of the movie.

The CAA-repped Burger, who also penned and helmed Iraq-veteran pic “The Lucky Ones,” is attached to direct “Dark Fields,” a thriller about a slacker who discovers a drug that makes him sharper. That pic is also set up at Universal, but progress has been slowed since star Shia LaBeouf was forced to pull out last year with a hand injury.

“Bride” has had a series of stops and starts. About five years ago, “American Splendor” scribes Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini were attached to write the screenplay for the Uni/Imagine update. Their concept was to set the picture in contemporary New York, with a young woman dying and then unnaturally brought back to life (Burger’s version is expected to differ significantly from that concept). Jacob Estes, a writer on Spider-Man spinoff “Venom,” also at one point had been attached to write a draft.

Brian Grazer and Sean Daniel will produce the pic;   Karen Kehela, David Bernardi and Chris Wade will oversee for Imagine.

Universal is eager to develop reboots of its library of classic monster titles, insiders in the development community said. It is developing a new version of “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” the 1954 Jack Arnold pic about a monstrous fish that a group of travelers encounters in the Amazon, and later this year it will release the Benicio Del Toro-toplined “The Wolf Man,” an update on George Waggner’s 1941 werewolf tale.

“Frankenstein” has been remade numerous times — Mary Shelley’s book sits in the public domain — but “Bride” has had only one other go-round on the big screen: a 1985 version at Columbia starring Sting and Jennifer Beals. In 1999, Bill Condon’s “Gods and Monsters,” a biopic of Whale, did show clips from the film and re-created the bride herself. Now a man known for illusions is going to try to do the same.

Honestly, I’m glad that they are going to remake the surperior entry into the Universal series, but there is a little bit of me that is still crying about the lack of originality.

More than likely, I’ll be in the theatre.

I Heart Horror… with a speckle of comedy.

ihearthorror_comedies

Hello Fiends!   It is time to switch gears.   I will be doing this frequently.   I hope you don’t mind.   You don’t, do you?   GOOOOOOOOOOD.   Sometimes I will be giving a “Pick of the Week” in this column, but most times I will want to talk about a subject.

I was debating on writing about this subject last week, but decided against it.   As you know, ‘Drag Me to Hell’ is the current theatrical horror release, well mainstream anyway.   It came in 4th place on it’s first weekend, fell 3 spots last week to #7 and then fell another 3 spots to #10 for it’s 3rd week. I think it is safe to say that it will only be in theatres  until tomorrow or the following Thursday.

This is Raimi’s forth film under Universal Studios.   Two of those films,   Darkman & Army of Darkness (his fourth – ‘For the Love of the Game’), almost buried his career with Universal & Hollywood for that matter.   ‘Army of Darkness’ was considered a bomb and his kinetic interpretation of a vigilante scientist was even worse under the financial eye.   What is kind of funny is that both of those films are cult classics now.   The Horror-Comedy genre has always underperformed at the box office and Raimi seems to be the victim of loving this odd little sub-genre and executing it to the finest degree.   When talking about the general movie going public in regards to films like ‘Drag Me To Hell’, they either want to be scared or laugh out loud because the film is so bad.   Any in-between and the audience is lost.   Sure, us horror geeks will get it, embrace it and tell more people how much fun we had.

So, if you haven’t seen ‘Drag Me to Hell’, GO SEE IT NOW!!!   If you have, enjoy the following top 5 films that I love out of this little corner of horror flicks.

5: Idle Hands

idlehands

This was a film made for stoners, Jessica Alba ooglers & horror geeks. ‘Idle Hands’ was released back in 1999 and did very, very poorly in the box office.   Rodman Flender directed this little gem.   Granted, the dude directed ‘Leprechaun 2’, but don’t let that hold you back.   Christopher Baffa – who’s first official DP credit was Nacho Cerda’s ‘Aftermath’ – photographed this film and littered it with Argento-like flavor to compliment the morbid side of the tale.   Anton (Devon Sawa) wakes up one day to find that his parents are missing.   Later in the film, he finds out that they were murdered as he discovers their corpses inside his house.   However, he starts to wonder if he is completely innocent as his hand starts to “act up” and evidence points towards himself as being the murderer.   He seeks advice from his stoner pals Mick (Seth Green) & Pnub (Elden Henson) while trying to hook up with Molly (Jessica Alba).   The film is hilarious with a great little score by Graeme Revell and basically takes the ‘possessed hand’ gag from Evil Dead 2 and makes it into a full length film.   It’s a film that I don’t mind popping in time to time for it’s light-heartedness and the physical comedy that is performed by Sawa who gladly steps into the boots of ‘Ash’ from the Evil Dead series.

4.Behind the Mask

behind-the-mask

Slasher films were definitely the product of the ’80’s.   Sure, there have been more recent slasher flicks like ‘Hatchet’, but how do you re-invent the slasher?   Meet ‘Behind the Mask’.   ‘Behind the Mask’ is a mockumentary that takes all the attributes of the slasher film and turns it around with a new perspective.   Why is it that the killer just walks and catches up with those fast kids?   The answer lies here.   The star of the show is played by Nathan Baesel, but he is complimented by Robert Englund in essentially a Sam Loomis (Halloween) type role.   The film is set in a world where Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger (ironic, I know) & Michael Myers are real killers, or psycho-slashers.   Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) is in training to become the next great psycho-slasher.   While preparing for his slaughterfest and picking out the stereotypical characters, a documentary crew films him.   Think ‘Man Bites Dog’ but with a lighter touch.     This is one to see folks.   Scott Glosserman crafts not only an iconic look for our killer, but also a very entertaining film.

3.Murder Party

murderparty1

This one is a film I have vowed to watch every Halloween.   I’m a sucker for films set on my favorite holiday, Halloween,  and if it’s a good flick as well, even better.

We are introduced to a lonely meter maid on his way home from what we can imagine was a crappy day.   While walking, he discovers an invite to a “Murder Party”.   Like a good guest, he whips up some pumpkin bread and makes a shoddy but creative costume out of duct tape and cardboard.   Once he arrives to the party – which only contains a small group – he realizes that it isn’t a party at all but more of an experiment.

The film can be predictable at times, but the troupe within the film makes it all work in very unpredictable devices.   It’s funny, dark and gruesome when one by one the organizers of said Murder Party start dying off.

This is a MUST SEE.

2. Dead-Alive

deadalive

Speaking of MUST SEE’s, ‘Dead-Alive’ (a.k.a. Braindead) was Peter Jackson’s earlier entry into his career.   After Meet The Feebles & Bad Taste, Jackson wanted to up the grue factor and bring something fun like the Evil Dead films.   Zombies run amok!   Babies are not safe & lawnmowers do more than cut grass.

The film is set back in the 50’s, this 1992 film tells the story of a man and his mum (yes…I had to say ‘mum’) and how far he would go to protect her after she has been “savaged” by a Sumatran rat-monkey and turned into a zombie.

Great characters like Uncle Les and kooky one-off characters really make the film.   The cover touts it as being “The Goriest Movie Ever Made”.   According to the amount of fake blood used, it still is.   It’s a good time, with quotable dialogue and great physical and camera effects.   Jackson perfected one of his camera tricks with this film, something I call the “wipe mask”.   This is where he would have an object wipe from right to left or left to right across the screen to hide a cut.   This is usually used to have an effect blend perfectly into the scene.

Peppered with comedy, blood and technical wizardry…this was the first footprint of a great director and is a neccessity for all horror fans.

1. Evil Dead 2

evildead21

Now, you didn’t think I was going to let this one slip.   Let’s face it, as much as you want to get those obscure movies in any horror film list, there is a reason this one is a classic.

Raimi basically remade ‘Evil Dead’ by cutting out a few characters and rewriting the basic story on what happened on the initial trip to the cabin.   Fanboys didn’t cry.   It improved the story and set the manic tone for what is now known as one of the best modern American horror film of our time.

Back in 1987, Freddy was already in his 3rd entry while Jason was taking a breather between Jason Lives and The New Blood.   What was being released that year were films that were introduced to a unappreciative audience, but would later become cult hits.   A list of other highlights in 1987 were:

  • Angel Heart
  • Bad Taste
  • Blood Diner (mainly a personal favorite of mine)
  • Creepshow 2 (The Raft is the only reason why I’m mentioning it)
  • The Gate
  • Hellraiser
  • The Hidden
  • The Lost Boys
  • Near Dark
  • The Monster Squad
  • Nekromantik
  • Night of the Demons
  • Argento’s Opera
  • Predator
  • Prince of Darkness
  • The Stepfather

All these films are pretty influential or at least we hold something in our hearts about these films.

Evil Dead 2 was one of the best films to come out of that year.   Often imitated but never replicated, the film was a perfect blend of horror and comedy and showed that laughing along with inanimated objects, that suddenly became animated for no reason, was perfectly normal.

If you own DVD’s and like horror…this should be in your collection.

Honorable Mention: The Convent

Maybe it is a guilty pleasure of mine, but this film is so damn stupid but fun at the same time.   It’s quotable and fun to look at.   Mike Mendez, who went on to direct The Gravedancers, spent years trying to get this film off the ground and spent even more trying to get it distributed.

Adrienne Barbeau, Bill Moseley and even Coolio show up in this one.   A group of college students try to complete a dare of spraypainting their letters on the walls of a haunted Convent.   However, they get more than they bargained for when some of them are possessed by satan’s spawn.   Yeah, it is a rip off of Night of the Demons, but I remember waiting for a long time after reading about it in Fangoria to see this film.   I laughed a lot.   Maybe more than anyone should, I thought.   However, in the 20 years, or more, that I have been watching horror films – I have shown this to some friends and they all quote the same lines I do and love it.   It’s stupid, it’s funny and the blacklight photography that makes up for the demon’s looks are awesome.

Once the first possession happens, the energy of this film just doesn’t let up.   Plus, Adrienne is a badass biker chick that sports a shotgun with a mission to send these demons back to hell!

Rent this one with a case of beer and I guarantee you that you will have a fun time.

Well, a new plot was dug recently, so it’s time for me to go 6 feet under and feed off more cinematic wonders.

Adiós!

Promo Trailer for Herzog’s vision of ‘Bad Lieutenant’

bad-lieutenant-herzog-poster

Oh boy.   Herzog, what the fuck are you doing with this film.   I pray that this is just a badly cut promo that is taking these scenes out of context.   However, I doubt it.   The problem with this promo isn’t on how it is cut, it is the content.

After I watched this, I swear I heard the echo of my laughter and, then immediate, weeping over what I witnessed.   Let’s rewind.

Werner Herzog stated that this will be his version of Bad Lieutenant.   He is not remaking Ferrara’s original, as he hasn’t seen it.   He sees Bad Lieutenant as something gamers would akin to Call of Duty, a product line.   While I can’t agree with him, I see where he is coming from.   Especially since Edward R. Pressman – the producer behind the original – is producing Herzog’s version.   Basically, what I get from it, is Pressman is cashing in on the name and giving Herzog a rough outline.   I mean, a bad & nasty cop isn’t anything new, why not make it a franchise.   Ah….franchises like Terminator, Star Wars, Transformers, Star Trek, Spider-Man, Batman…..Bad Lieutenant.   Yep, makes sense.

Enjoy & squirm at the below promo reel/trailer courtesy of Twitch (Yes, it looks like  the preview is unavailable – but hit the play button & just dismiss it as Twitch trying to give you a last chance):

‘Sherlock Holmes’ Trailer is Online!

sherlock-holmes2

I’ve always liked Robert Downey, Jr.   Even when everyone was kicking him while he was down, the man was a talented actor.   Now, he has moved on & moved past it – so has the media (THANK GOD).   Him and Jude Law are now the bestest of pals in upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie.

DVD Review: ‘Timecrimes’

16065_timecrimes_screen_nacho_vigalondo_with_chart

The Movie:

More than likely, you are reading this expecting another horror thriller.   Or, maybe you heard the rumor that this film was going to be remade by David Cronenberg.   Either way, welcome.   Before I start this, let it be known that Jeremy already wrote a review about this film when it was playing at the St. Louis International Film Festival this past November.   I stress that this is not only a review of the film, but of the Region 1 DVD presentation as well.

‘Timecrimes’ is best experienced knowing little about it.   Yes, you probably know it is a time travel movie.   I can say   that it is not a traditional time travel film though, as the character doesn’t understand the science until he is learning through process.   Our main character, while relaxing in his backyard, scopes out with his binoculars a woman undressing.   That’s what I thought men, you are already interested.   He later sees & is chased by a man covered in bloody bandages.

Honestly, to tell you any more about this film would probably ruin your experience.   Jeremy gave it a 2.5 out of 5 on his review, but I think it deserves better.   I think everyone went into this film expecting something totally different.   Let’s face it, it was covered on the main horror sites & it has a character that looks iconic and menacing…sounds like a horror movie to me.   It’s not.   It is more of a mystery thriller, and if you expect a horror movie – you will be disappointed.   You are placed in the man’s shoes as he tries to right the wrongs of his past “segments”, but you the viewer are slightly one step ahead of him.

The film is a puzzle and boy is it fun to try to piece together.   I have watched this film about 3 times now and it is so much fun.   To me, it has replay value.   It’s smart & calculated.   At times, it almost reminded me of ‘Memento’ with how it linked everything.   It is not done in the same style as that film, but there are things that are explained as you progress through the film.

I recommend seeing this film as soon as possible.   Especially if you love time travel films.

DVD Features:

This DVD has some great extras on it.   They include a Making Of & Make-up featurettes, Cast & Crew Interviews along with a Photo Gallery and Teaser Trailer.   Also included is Vigalondo’s short film “7:35 de la mañana (7:35 in the morning)” which has some tasty flavor behind it.   It is a great little short to check out.   Also included is an extensive look at the Timecrimes viral campaign that ran in Spain.   Vigalondo explains how he was inspired by the Lost ARG (Alternate Reality Game) to creat something to have people feel more involved and have more back story once they see the film.   The featurettes, 5 in total, end up running about 35 minutes all together.   It’s a neat look at how they tried to blend the story into real life and is fun to watch.

[Overall: 4 out of 5 – Rent the damn thing already!]

DVD Review: ‘Donkey Punch’

donkey_punch

The Movie:

American audiences have a strange fascination with debauchery.   Don’t get me wrong, I’m not excluding myself out of this group (I love ‘Rules of Attraction’ & it is in my top 100 films of all time), but I always found it odd how something that we shouldn’t really care about with fictional characters became interesting when committed to celluoid.   Some people believe it my be the self destructive nature of it all.   Before you say “Andy, I’m a way better person than this.”, check your DVD shelf and look for that movie called “American Pie”.  That’s what I thought.   Put it back and hang your head in shame in trying to prove me wrong.

Let’s face it, seeing someone on the screen trying to work his or her way to get sexual satisifaction can be entertaining.   That brings me to ‘Donkey Punch’.   What starts out a fun, light & colorful film following some British youths looking for a good time, slowly spirals into dark territory.   The party starts on land with three young, beautiful ladies as they meet up with some dudes at a party and run off after stealing a bottle of bubbly.

Deciding that the shore cannot hold them down, the three girls convince the boys – who are mates on a yacht – to take it out to the open shore.   Of course, this is where their fun turns sour and then spins out of control.

The daylight scenes shown in the film are beautiful and bring a light sense to the film.   As soon as the sun sets, the events follow the sun into darkness.   I will spare you to the definiton of what a DONKEY PUNCH is.   I highly recommend you find out through the movie, if you don’t know – pervert.

Once a character dies, the remaining youths try to cover up the accidential death.   We are then treated to basically the characters battling it out on whether they should tell the truth or not.

While I love the first half  of the film, the problem with ‘Donkey Punch’ is in the character development.   These characters put the viewer in a tough situation as we really don’t get to know the characters therefore, when the shit hits the fan – you are just going to see how they get out of it.   The director, Olly Blackburn, has the chops and the ability to direct.   The problem lies in the script.   Why should we care about the characters?   He could have used the script to it’s advantage and turned out a little revenge film or possibly just a display on how these kids turn against each other and off themselves in horrible ways.   This is not this film.   I will commend and applaud to the bold attempts to not shy away from the explicit sexual scenes.

‘Donkey Punch’ is bold & ultimately unsatisfying and is best viewed with low expectations as it doesn’t bring anything new to the genre of horror or thrillers.   Gosh darn it if it doesn’t look pretty though.

[Overall: 2.75 out of 5 – rent it if curious]

DVD Features:

Included on the DVD are Deleted Scenes, a featurette on the Making of ‘Donkey Punch”, interviews with the cast & the director, and a Director Commentary.   The commentary is carried out by the director and one of the producers that ranges from why they shot in South Africa.   Having a producer with a director on a commentary track always interests me.   If you really enjoy the film, this would be something you would want to check out.

WB offers HD-DVD to Blu-Ray Mail Program

red2blu
To be a movie geek, one must know the suffering of everchanging technology. Warner Bros. is trying to make it easier on us though. Last month, Travis reported on how WB was going to release some obscure films via a website that will send you a studio quality copy DVD-R for the film you order. Yes, it would be barebones, but oh well.

Now, WB is helping out the early adopters of Hi-Def. With Red2blu.com, you can now trade in your HD-DVD of ‘Under Seige’ for a Blu-Ray copy.

However, you will have to pay about $5 (unless you are trading a collection) and then about $7 in shipping. This could save you money, or being the movie geek you are might just make you hold on to that precious HD-DVD copy for memorabilia sake. Just don’t get it lost with your laserdiscs or BetaMax tapes.

Hop on over to Red2blu.com to see what titles are available.
