Frank Langella Joins Cast of THE DRIFTLESS AREA
Oscar nominee Frank Langella (FROST/NIXON, ROBOT & FRANK) has joined the cast of the unconventional romance THE DRIFTLESS AREA alongside the previously announced Anton Yelchin (LIKE CRAZY, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, STAR TREK), three-time Golden Globe nominee Zooey Deschanel (500 DAYS OF SUMMER, ELF, ALL THE REAL GIRLS), Oscar® nominee John Hawkes (THE SESSIONS, WINTER’S BONE, LINCOLN), Ciaran Hinds (MUNICH, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) and Alia Shawkat (Fox/Netflix’s “Arrested Development,” CEDAR RAPIDS), it was announced today by producers Unified Pictures and Bron Studios.
Adapted from award-winning author Tom Drury’s novel of the same title, THE DRIFTLESS AREA will be directed by Zachary Sluser, who co-wrote the screenplay with Drury.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin on May 14th in greater Vancouver.
The film is being produced by Keith Kjarval, through his Unified Pictures production/finance banner and Aaron L. Gilbert, via Bron Studios, in association with CW Media Finance. Nicole Romano at Anonymous Content manages Sluser and is Executive Producer on the film.
Foreign sales are being handled by Mimi Steinbauer’s Radiant Films International, who will present the project to buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. CAA, which packaged THE DRIFTLESS AREA, represents the film’s domestic distribution rights.
In this unconventional romance with elements of crime and the supernatural, the young love between bartender Pierre and the mysterious Stella is threatened when Pierre gets mixed up with a dangerous crook and his bag of stolen cash.
“Frank Langella is a powerful character actor who elevates every project he is associated with and lights up the screen with his effortless acting skills. As such, he is a welcome addition to THE DRIFTLESS AREA cast as the film begins production,” said Steinbauer.
Said Kjarval, “I’ve admired Frank and his work for a long time and view his onscreen presence as immeasurable, so bringing him into ‘The Driftless Area’ is truly exciting. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the rounding out of this great cast.”
Frank Langella can currently be seen in theatres in Summit Entertainment’s DRAFT DAY opposite Kevin Costner.
His other upcoming projects include GRACE OF MONACO, co-starring Nicole Kidman, which is opening the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and 5 TO 7 opposite Glenn Close. His other credits include ROBOT & FRANK, WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS, GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK and SUPERMAN RETURNS. He was nominated for an Oscar for his leading performance as Richard Nixon in Ron Howard’s FROST/NIXON and won a Tony Award for his performance in Peter Morgan’s stage play of the same name.
Langella is repped by Paradigm.
