David Cronenberg’s COSMOPOLIS Trailer And Poster

By  |

In 2009 WAMG first brought you news of David Cronenberg’s film COSMOPOLIS. From the film’s French Facebook page, a first trailer and poster has surfaced in the last few hours. The film stars Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Amalric, Samantha Morton, Sarah Gadon and Kevin Durand.

New York City, not-too-distant-future: Eric Packer, a 28 year-old finance golden boy dreaming of living in a civilization ahead of this one, watches a dark shadow cast over the firmament of the Wall Street galaxy, of which he is the uncontested king. As he is chauffeured across midtown Manhattan to get a haircut at his father’s old barber, his anxious eyes are glued to the yuan’s exchange rate: it is mounting against all expectations, destroying Eric’s bet against it. Eric Packer is losing his empire with every tick of the clock. Meanwhile, an eruption of wild activity unfolds in the city’s streets. Petrified as the threats of the real world infringe upon his cloud of virtual convictions, his paranoia intensifies during the course of his 24-hour cross-town odyssey. Packer starts to piece together clues that lead him to a most terrifying secret: his imminent assassination.

Cronenberg revisits subjects that fascinate him: how the organic and the psychological are inextricably intertwined, society’s anxieties and phobias, and letting repressed impulses and paranoia run wild. COSMOPOLIS is a culmination of his masterpieces that addresses the alarming global financial crisis of today’s world. It is a hauntingly prophetic fable that turns the future into history and suggests that the archaic might be our eerie future.

COSMOPOLIS’ principal photography started on May 23rd, 2011 in Toronto, Canada, gathering some of the most enthusiastic media response seen in today’s industry. The film wrapped on July 2011.

The production of Cosmopolis is a union of two of the world’s greatest modern storytellers: the award-winning author Don DeLillo, and the acclaimed film director David Cronenberg; a project that is truly an international production. Indisputably one of the major forces of American Literature, DeLillo’s work is both frenetic and extremely visual, with the action all taking place in New York within a 24-hour period of time.

Cronenberg, one of the world’s most respected filmmakers, adapted the novel for the big screen and will direct the film as well. The producer is none other than Paulo Branco, the experienced Portuguese producer (Alfama Films) in a co-production with David Cronenberg’s company Cosmopolis Inc.

Born in the United States in 1936, Don DeLillo is one of the most influential contemporary authors, whose works offer a carefully detailed portrait of life in America in the last century. His innate talent is reflected in the way that his writings first surfaced, and in his educational background: he graduated in Communication Arts, and then worked as a copywriter; he never thought that literature could become his life. In 1971, he wrote his first novel, Americana; after which time he lived in Greece for several years. Then, in 1985, he published White Noise, a novel that definitively thrust him into the limelight, as one of the most prominent figures of post-modern literature.

Howard Shore, Oscar winner composer for the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy soundtrack, is also involved in COSMOPOLIS, as well as David Cronenberg’s regular cinematographer, Peter Suschitzky, renowned for his works in “Empire Strikes Back” or “Crash”.

The film will be released in France on May 23rd and Portugal on May 31st.
