Original Cuban Movie Posters Of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE SHINING Arrive At The Academy

By  |

One hundred twenty-five hand-silkscreened posters for Cuban-produced and international films, including “A Clockwork Orange,” “The Shining,” “The Bicycle Thief,” “Z,” “Strawberry and Chocolate” and “Fallen Gods,” will be on display in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences new exhibition “Cuban Film Posters: From Havana to the World,” beginning Friday, May 13, in the Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery. The exhibition, open to the public, will run through Sunday, August 28. Admission is free.

Created by artists engaged by the Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematograficos (ICAIC), the Cuban film institute that was formed soon after the revolution in 1959, the artworks have been donated to the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library.

The ICAIC promotes the medium of film through a range of diverse activities, including film and television production. Each year the organization also presents throughout Cuba numerous screenings of locally produced and international films, and for each film a unique poster is created by a Cuban graphic artist. These posters are then widely distributed across the country, underscoring the important role that cinema and the visual arts play in contemporary Cuban life.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Academy and the Los Angeles Film Festival will present “A Celebration of Cuban Film” on Wednesday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Hosted by the festival’s artistic director David Ansen, the program will feature film clips, an onstage panel discussion with visiting Cuban directors, and a screening of “Strawberry and Chocolate” (1994), Cuba’s only Foreign Language Film award nominee to date.

The Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery, located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends, noon to 6 p.m. The gallery will be closed for the Memorial Day (May 28 and 29) and Independence Day (July 2 and 3) holiday weekends.

Tickets to “A Celebration of Cuban Film” will be on sale beginning on Wednesday, June 1. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID.  Tickets may be purchased online at, at the Academy box office (8949 Wilshire Boulevard, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), or by mail. The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at the 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
