James Cameron Among Directors on New ‘Heavy Metal’

james-cameron-heavy-metal

There has been talk of a new ‘Heavy Metal’ film for years, and directors like David Fincher and Guillermo Del Toro have been bandied about.   The latest word today comes from our buddies over at Film School Rejects who sat down with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles co-creator Kevin Eastman.   According to Eastman, James Cameron and Fincher will serve as Co-Executive Producers on the film, and that Cameron will actually direct one of the film’s segments.

Fincher’s name is still on board as one of the directors, Eastman dropped Cameron’s name, as well, and he also mentioned Zack Snyder and Gore Verbinski would be directing their own segments, too.   Eastman went on to say Mark Osborne (‘Kung Fu Panda’) would be rejoining Jack Black for a segment.   Eastman also mentioned three more directors with names just as jaw-dropping as those mentioned above have agreed but have, as yet, officially signed on.

What other names could these be?   Del Toro is a good candidate.   Some are thinking Peter Jackson and Shawn Levy are likely candidates, as well.   Look for official announcements to come our way in the next month or two, possibly at 2009’s Comic-Con.

What do you think?   Who would your ideal candidates be for those final, three slots?   What do you think of Cameron stepping in to direct a segment?   Think there is any way this thing is going to make its target release date if, in fact, Cameron is on board to direct?   Let us know by commenting below!

Heavy Loader from ‘Avatar’ unveiled at E3 2009

avatarheavyloader1

Check out the Heavy Loader from James Cameron’s upcoming 3D opus ‘Avatar’. The massive bipedal hunk of walking destruction was unveiled at E3 2009 in Los Angeles. I have to say, it’s pretty freaking awesome, despite my own personal sense of walker overload, with the concept being used in so many sci-fi movies. ‘Avatar’ Getting Three-Month IMAX Run

cameron-avatar

It’s been nearly 12 years since James Cameron had a feature film released in theaters, and everyone is anticipating ‘Avatar,’ his next film.   Everyone including the people at IMAX.   They are giving ‘Avatar’ a three-month release in IMAX theaters across the country.   To compare, ‘Star Trek’ only got a two-week run in IMAX theaters.

Now, this is certainly occurring for two different reasons.   One, IMAX has a lot of faith in Cameron’s ability to draw a crowd.   Millions of people around the world are going to want to see ‘Avatar’ in the best way possible, and IMAX theaters are the best out there.

The other reason this is happening is because no other films are releasing their films in IMAX.   IMAX has the final word, but the fact that Cameron’s film is coming out near the end of December puts it in a rather lucrative position for IMAX.   Certainly, no major releases in January or February will warrant an IMAX release, and nothing is slated for IMAX until March 5th sees the release of Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland.’

IMAX still hopes that by the end of 2010, they will have enough theaters nationwide to release more than one major film on their screens.

‘Avatar’ is set for release on December 18th.

Linda Hamilton in Negotations for ‘Terminator: Salvation’

linda-hamilton-terminator

I don’t know what is more shocking/amazing about this bit of news, the fact that Linda Hamilton is talking about reprising her Sarah Connor role in the ‘Terminator’ series or the fact that ‘Terminator: Salvation’ is still casting people.   Regardless, the woman who made Sarah Connor such a badass is in negotiations to return.   In an interview with MTV, she revealed as such.

“We are talking,† Hamilton told MTV. “I haven’t read it yet. I don’t know what direction they will go in.†

She does know, however, what he part will be in the film.

“My contribution would be voiceover,† she said. “I would probably be very happy to loan my voice depending on what the material is. Wait and see. They’re already writing it. We’ve been negotiating it.†

In the interview, Hamilton also talked about hers as well as James Cameron involvement (or lack, thereof) in ‘Terminator 3’.

“They offered me a part,† she said. “I read it and I knew my character arc was so complete in the first two, and in the third one it was a negligible character. She died halfway through and there was no time to mourn her. It was kind of disposable, so I said no thank you.†

“I think [director] Jim [Cameron] was pretty clearly not going to be involved with the third one,† she continued. “His partner had sold the rights to the third one. Then they came back to Jim, but it was so far along after the fact that he’d moved on. And I wouldn’t be involved with it if it weren’t Jim Cameron. The third one was all right but it just didn’t have the heat and excitement that Jim can bring.†

So, what do you think?   Happy Linda Hamilton will be returning to the ‘Terminator’ franchise?   Wish she had some kind of bigger part than just doing a voiceover?   Could Linda Hamilton kick Lena Heady’s ass?   Let us know by commenting below!

James Cameron may enter ‘The Forbidden Planet’

James Cameron has been considering this project (amongst others) for many years, but now with Warner Bros apparently pushing forward at full speed, Cameron is apparently chomping at the bit again to helm this remake of the original 1956 sci-fi classic. Cameron’s last film was in 2005 and is currently working on his 3D epic ‘Avatar’ which will be followed by ‘Battle Angel’. In addition, he also already has ‘The Dive’ on his plate and is producing the remake of ‘Fantastic Voyage’. If we do see a ‘Forbidden Planet’ remake from Cameron, it may be a while.

Cameron and close partner and friend Gigantic Ego, may want to have first shot at bringing one of the most ground-breaking science fiction films of its time back to the big screen. Imagine the new technology he could create for Robby the Robot.

‘Avatar’ Getting an IMAX Release

James Cameron just keeps making ’em bigger and better. Â  It appears, now, that his next film, ‘Avatar’, is going to get an IMAX 3D release on December 18, 2009 along with the film’s wide release. Â  IMAX Corp. and 20th Century Fox made the announcement on Thursday.

“Our goal with ‘Avatar’ is to revolutionize live-action 3-D movie-making, and I have no doubt that it will look and sound incredible in Imax 3-D,” Cameron said. “The larger field of view and power surround sound of an Imax theater will completely immerse the audience in a way that cannot be experienced anywhere else.”

‘Avatar’ tells the story of an ex-marine who finds himself in the middle of a galactic civil war. Â  It will be Cameron’s first feature film since 1997’s ‘Titanic’.

The film is nearly a year away. Â  We should be getting a teaser trailer any day now, I would hope.
