FUNNY MONEY: THE DANE COOK STORY – Review

Looks like 2026 is shaping up to be a great year for documentaries. Now, don’t groan. They aren’t the cinematic version of “eating your vegetables” or “homework”. No, they’re going to be a big part of end-of-the-year top ten lists, not to mention “awards talk”. And this just might be the year that one or two of them crack the Oscar Best Picture list (it can now have as many as ten contenders). YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING got lots of energized “buzz” at a recent film festival, plus I’ll be praising BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL when it gets a wide release. One of the most popular “doc genres” is the chronicling of a “true crime”, though I really enjoy the bios of “show folk” (really “jazzed” for upcoming ones of Martin Mull, Norm McDonald, and Maria Bamford). Well, this new “non-fiction flick” actually combines the two (“You got celeb in my crime…you got crime in my celeb”). And like that beloved candy, there’s much to savor in FUNNY MONEY: THE DANE COOK STORY. Let’s unwrap this tasty treat…

As the title states, this is the story of stand-up comedy superstar Dane Cook. The opening, like much of what follows, is the funny fella’ talking to us (the camera, really). We get lots of biographical info with faded photos and scratchy 8mm home movies, segueing into blurry home video. Even though he was a child of divorce, Cook made the best of it, with the help and support of his “best pal” and idol, his half-brother Daryl. Always a fan of comedy, Dane entered the world of the open-mike in 1990, during the big stand-up “resurgence” via cable TV, videotapes, CDS, and a slot at nearly every bar with a spotlight and a brick wall. As his star was rising, things weren’t going well for “bro Daryl” in his job as a prison guard. During an altercation, he was sliced with a metal can “shiv” and almost bled out. Dane facilitated a career change, putting him on the “payroll” as head of his security team. Then Daryl became his business manager, just as Dane broke into movies, put a recording on the top of the Billboard chart, and filled arenas and stadiums (a second show was added to MSG). When Dane decided he now needed the services of a big talent agency, Daryl tried to talk him out of it. Then, the unthinkable happened. Dane went to apply for a bank loan in order to purchase a plush estate (no more rentals), and the rep “lowered the boom”. Only “crumbs” were left in the accounts that Daryl had set up for him. Dane was getting “fleeced” by his beloved “bro”. This leads to a cross-country chase for him, as Dane, with his “financial forensics team,” makes some shocking and often absurd discoveries about this “crime spree”.

Separately, this show biz “rise-to-fame” fable and the true tale of greed and deception would be compelling enough, but in this expert blending by documentary vet Bret Harvey (with writing collaborator Pollyanna Hardwick-Brown), the result hits on all emotional cylinders. Though I was unfamiliar with the body of Dane’s work, I found the story of his childhood (lotsa’ “hard knocks,” for sure) and his career ambitions very enlightening, especially the story of him grabbing an absent comic’s “slot”. Then there’s the endearing bond he has with his older stepbrother (Dane still taps into those old emotions). We get “talking head” interviews with childhood buddies of both men, along with their sister. And then there’s Erika, Daryl’s ex-wife (his second missus), who also spins quite a tale. She’s “tough to read” as we wonder if she’s a “co-mastermind” or a very, very naive “dupe”. But her “side” is needed since we never hear from Daryl himself, other than old videos and a haunting final phone message. Yes, it’s heartbreaking, but often quite hilarious, even with the zany scheming of the guilty (you may never think of spaghetti sauce and Bagel Bites in the same way again). Still, much like Dane, we’re left wondering about the “crime”. It’s one thing to “skim”, but he tries to take it all. Perhaps due to his years at the mic, Cook is quite an engrossing storyteller as he pulls us into his astounding career highlights (he passed on auditioning for SNL, but later hosted), then guides us into a dark quagmire of lies and larceny. Still, somehow he can find the laughter bursting through the tears. Kudos to him and filmmaker Harvey for taking us on the wild, wacky, and heartbreaking ride of FUNNY MONEY: THE DANE COOK STORY.

PLANES : FIRE & RESCUE – The Review

PLANES FIRE & RESCUE

Wow, talk about your quick sequel turn-around. This weekend sees two follow-ups to surprise box office hits from 2013. For thriller fans there’s THE PURGE: ANARCHY (check out Mike Haffner’s review!) and for the kiddies it’s the return of that low flyer, Dusty Crophopper in PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE. And once again, the ads tell us it’s set in the world of CARS (as with last year’s flick, this is not from the Pixar gang, it’s officially from DisneyToon Studios with much of the work produced by Prana Studios of India). It’s clear from this new film that the makers will not need to piggyback on the earlier Pixar hit again. With this one, Dusty and his pals can stake a claim on their own series, because like the new Apes film still in theatres, this is a much improved, superior sequel.

The opening credits provide us with a look back at the first film’s events plus a recap of Dusty’s (Dane Cook) racing victories over the last year. He’s become quite the celebrity and is the home-grown hero of Propwash Junction.  And he’s to be the main attraction at the upcoming Corn Festival. Skipper (Stacy Keach) still coaches Dusty on his practice runs. One day Dusty barely avoids a crash when his engine cuts out during a climb. Dotti (Teri Hatcher) delivers a sobering diagnosis: his gear box is nearly shot, so no more rapid accelerations till they locate a replacement (it’s not being manufactured any longer). But Dusty has a stubborn streak, and that night, in secret, he makes a solo test run. And once more the engine conks out, causing him to damage the control tower and fuel tank. The antiquated fire truck Mayday (Hal Holbrook) fails to contain the resulting fire, which destroys most of the airport. The safety inspectors shut down the runway and threaten to cancel the Corn Fest until Mayday can be upgraded and paired with another certified rescue vehicle. Dusty is determined to make things right and decides to get certified as a fire and rescue plane. In order to get the training and testing he flies out to Piston Peak. There he meets the team: flirty transport plane Dipper (Julie Bowen), somber Windlifter (Wes Studi), the all-terrain Smokejumpers, and his stern teacher, the veteran chopper Blade Ranger (Ed Harris). Dusty tries to hide his gear box trouble from Blade as a raging forest fire threatens the Peak Lodge and forces the untested crop duster to dive into blazing danger.

Sounds pretty exciting, eh? In a smart move, the producers have left the “big race” setting of the previous flick for a more dramatic arena. Saving lives sure beats winning medals and trophies. With the higher stakes, the smallest viewers may be frightened by the threatening inferno that the crew must face (just like BAMBI and his pals). Kudos to director Roberts Gannaway and the animation team for providing terrific work on those flames along with a very dangerous set of rapids that lead to some equally scary falls. Actually there’s excellent work done with the design of all the vehicles (we even get a gorgeous old-timey train) and the opulent Lodge/hotel. Oh, and the 3D looks good, but it’s not essential in the enjoyment of this flick. Plus there’s a lot more wit in this script, especially when the Peak’s crew reveal Blade’s acting past to an awestruck Dusty (I’m still smiling over the dummy VHS box). The voice work is top-notch as usual. Cook is still pleasantly earnest and enthusiastic as the boyish hero. The standouts in the new cast are the delightful Holbrook as the grandfatherly old fire engine. And Harris uses a bit of his mission control gravitas as the taciturn, often gruff , no-nonsense chopper. Plus there are two wonderful comedy teams in great supporting turns. Christopher Guest film regulars John Michael Higgins and Fred Willard have a lot of fun as the smarmy Cad and the Interior Secretary. But best of all may be Ben’s parents, Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller, as longtime married vehicles Winnie and Harvey who might have picked the wrong spot to celebrate their anniversary. This time out, there’s really a little something for the whole family. So, if you’ve got kids that have been bitten by the aviation bug head to the boarding gate over at the multiplex and take off with PLANES : FIRE & RESCUE.

Dane Cook Tapped To Voice DUSTY In DISNEY’S PLANES

PLANES
©Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Dane Cook has been tapped to voice the lead character Dusty, a plane with high hopes in “Disney’s Planes.” Inspired by the world of “Cars” and directed by Disneytoon Studios veteran and aviation enthusiast Klay Hall (“King of the Hill,” “The Simpsons”), “Disney’s Planes” is an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure about Dusty’s dream of competing as a high-flying air racer—and his decidedly unfortunate fear of heights. The film takes off in theaters in 3D on Aug. 9, 2013.

“Dane Cook brings unmatched charisma and brilliant comedic timing and instincts to the character,” said Hall. “He gives Dusty a great edge.”

Cook is well known for his appearances on Comedy Central and HBO specials, and for his successful comedy albums. He recently guest starred on “Louie” opposite Louie C.K., and his film credits include starring roles in a host of films, including “My Best Friend’s Girl” opposite Kate Hudson, “Dan In Real Life” opposite Steve Carell, and “Mr. Brooks” opposite Kevin Costner. The actor/comedian just signed a deal with NBC Entertainment and Universal Television to develop a new project starring Cook.

The all-new story offers an exciting cast of characters and centers on Dusty’s high-flying dream. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing, so he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

The film is produced by Traci Balthazor-Flynn and executive produced by John Lasseter.
