WAMG Checks Out The Red Carpet For The 91st Oscars

“We Are Movie Geeks?..Aren’t we all” the young gentleman taking the photo for the Oscars badge said, and how correct he was.  The stage is set for tomorrow nights awards; red carpet out, lighting set, roads closed, and security up. The crowds are even larger than usual in Hollywood, with movie fans out in force to see the pageantry. Temperatures are cooler than usual, but by this time tomorrow night the town will be hot!

The 91st Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

The Oscar Week events at the Academy once again treated movie fans to an up-close look and discussion with some of the Oscar nominated filmmakers.

OSCAR WEEK: DOCUMENTARIES was on Tuesday, February 19 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The evening was hosted by Academy Documentary Branch Governors Rory Kennedy and Roger Ross Williams

Kennedy received an Oscar nomination for the documentary feature “Last Days in Vietnam.”  Her other directing credits include “Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton,” “Ethel” and “Ghosts of Abu Ghraib.”  Williams won an Oscar for the documentary short subject “Music by Prudence” and received a second Oscar nomination for the documentary feature “Life, Animated.” His other credits include “God Loves Uganda,” “Blackface” and “Take Back the Harbor.”

OSCAR WEEK: SHORTS was Wednesday, February 20 and was hosted by Academy Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Governors Jon Bloom and Tom Sito.

Bloom produced and directed the live action short “Overnight Sensation,” which earned him an Oscar nomination.  He founded his production company, BloomFilm, in 1987 after two decades in the entertainment industry.  Sito, a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, has worked on numerous films, including “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Shrek,” “Osmosis Jones” and “Garfield.”

OSCAR WEEK: FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM was held Thursday, Feb. 21st and was hosted by Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee chairs Larry Karaszewski and Diane Weyermann.

Karaszewski is a screenwriter best known for his collaborations with Scott Alexander.  Their feature film credits include “Ed Wood,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Man on the Moon” and “Big Eyes.”  Most recently, Karaszewski worked on FX’s “American Crime Story.” Weyermann is a producer whose numerous credits include the documentaries “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” “CitizenFour” and “Food, Inc.” She recently executive-produced “American Factory,” which was shown in the U.S. Documentary competition at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

The final events will take place on Saturday.

OSCAR WEEK: ANIMATED FEATUREwill be hosted by Academy Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Governor Bonnie Arnold.

Arnold, a producer at DreamWorks Animation, produced the Oscar-nominated films “How to Train Your Dragon” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”  Her additional producing credits include Pixar’s landmark movie “Toy Story,” Disney’s “Tarzan” and DreamWorks’ upcoming “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.”  She served as co-president/president of feature animation at DreamWorks Animation from 2015 to 2017.

The MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING SYMPOSIUM will be hosted by Academy Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch Governors Kathryn L. BlondellLois Burwell and Leonard Engelman

Blondell is a BAFTA-winning hairstylist for “The Aviator.”  Her other film credits include “The Revenant,” “Django Unchained,” “Inception,” Shampoo” and “Harold and Maude.”  Burwell won an Oscar for her work on “Braveheart” and was nominated for “Saving Private Ryan.”  Her other feature credits include “Lincoln” and “The Princess Bride.”  Engelman has served as a makeup artist on such features as “Burlesque,” “Heat,” “Moonstruck,” “Rocky IV” and “Ghostbusters.”
