PREDATOR Celebrates A Birthday – Released This Day 31 Years Ago, June 12, 1987

Director John McTiernan’s sci-fi classic PREDATOR was released 31 years ago today on June 12, 1987.

Having just starred in THE TERMINATOR (1984), RED SONJA and COMMANDO (1985), Arnold Schwarzenegger was the biggest movie star of the 1980’s with his name alone selling tickets.

PREDATOR also featured Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Kevin Peter Hall (as The Predator) and writer/actor Shane Black (LETHAL WEAPON, THE MONSTER SQUAD), has one of the best opening credits, scored by composer Alan Silvestri, and is one of the quintessential sci-fi films from the 1980’s.

Major Dutch Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is the leader of a military rescue unit looking for allies captured by guerrillas in the Latin American jungle. At first it seems like any other mission: Schaefer and his team of seasoned combat veterans spot a guerilla camp, destroy it, and find the men they were sent to rescue executed. But when Schaefer attempts to lead his unit out, with a captured guerrilla in tow, something horrifying and inexplicable begins to happen: One by one the men are killed by a mysterious adversary – a Predator from another world.

The franchise saw the sequels PREDATOR 2 (1990) and PREDATORS (2010). After seeing the skull of a xenomorph in the trophy room during the finale of PREDATOR 2, a crossover with the Alien franchise produced the long-awaited Alien vs. Predator films, which includes ALIEN VS. PREDATOR (2004) and ALIENS VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM (2007).

PREDATOR spawned such iconic lines as “If it bleeds we can kill it,” “Get to the choppah!” and “I ain’t got time to bleed,” however the line that got a cheering response from audiences in the theater was from Arnold, as seen below, in the ultimate showdown.

PREDATOR saw an Oscar nomination for Best Effects, Visual Effects (Joel Hynek, Robert M. Greenberg, Richard Greenberg and Stan Winston) and was Number 1 at the US box office in its opening weekend with a gross of $12 million.

20th Century Fox will release the latest movie in the franchise, THE PREDATOR September 2018. From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series.

Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
