After the initial FRIDAY THE 13TH, during the early 80’s, the summer camp horror sub-genre of slasher flicks took a firm grip of the American imagination. The 1982 entry MADMAN seems to shares a kinship with another of its kind, THE BURNING, filmed in upstate New York around the same time and also inspired by the real-life around-the-campfire story of The Kropsy Maniac. MADMAN stars Gaylen Ross, the lead in Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD, acting under alias Alex Dubin

I’ve seen THE BURNING, but don’t believe I ever saw MADMAN. I could be wrong since since much of the ‘80s was a blur. MADMAN looks to be the type of archetypal shocker that would have played St. Louis Drive-ins during the years that I frequenting them at least a couple of times a week, so maybe it will come back to me when I see it this weekend.

The villain in MADMAN is “Madman” Marz, a brutal psychopath who’d butchered his family with an axe and gotten lynched for it soon after. However, his body disappeared from its noose…Years later, Marz’s story is spun by the director of a nearby camp, and the warning is made: do not utter the name of “Madman” Marz above a whisper in his woods or he’ll come to get you! A disbelieving jerk teenager then proceeds to YELL out the name, and Marz makes good his return.
