THE MARTIAN Earns $55 Million At This Weekend’s Box Office

Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN is the No. 1 movie in North America, earning $55 million at the box office during its opening weekend, Rentrak announced Sunday.

Coming in at No. 2 is HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 with $33 million, followed by SICARIO at No. 3 with $12.1 million, THE INTERN at No. 4 with $11.6 million and THE MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS at No. 5 with $7.7 million.

BLACK MASS came in at No. 6 with $5.9 million, EVEREST at No. 7 with $5.5 million, THE VISIT at No. 8 with $3.9 million, WAR ROOM at No. 9 with $2.8 million and THE PERFECT GUY at No. 10 with $2.4 million.

Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “Fox’s ‘The Martian’ blasts off in 50 global territories with a $100.2 million debut that has the film topping the box office charts in North America and internationally by capitalizing on great word-of-mouth and critical raves.

THE WALK brought in only $1,550,000 in 448 cinemas bringing its total to a disappointing $1.972 million.
