Straight Outta Compton

Director F. Gary Gray’s film about the rise of N.W.A. was number one at this weekend’s box office. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON brought in an estimated $56.1 million in receipts opening at 2,757 U.S. theaters.

With a reported budget of $29 million, Universal Pictures’ biopic is the sixth No. 1 opening for the studio this year and the best R-rated August opening ever.

“‘Straight Outta Compton’ is for Universal yet another example of a perfectly realized distribution and marketing plan that brought an important story to the big screen,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak. “Not only did audiences clearly love the film, but critics were on board as well.”

The film also brought in fans with a successful viral marketing campaign ranging from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Straight Outta Somewhere.com, and sky writing over the Los Angeles area.

Paramount Pictures MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION was number two with estimates putting it at $17 million.

Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “Tom Cruise does it again as Paramount’s ‘Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation’ maintained the overall number one position both worldwide and in the international territories for the third consecutive weekend. The fifth in the franchise, this “Mission” is now closing in on the $400 million mark globally.”

Director Guy Ritchie’s stylish THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. came in third place with a dismal $13.5 million. Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Jared Harris and Hugh Grant, Warner Bros. Pictures’ movie is a new take on the popular 1960s television series, but failed to connect with audiences. (review)
