You never know what’s brewing at Webster University’s Strange Brew cult film series. It’s always the first Wednesday evening of every month, and they always come up with some cult classic to show while enjoying some good food and great suds. The fun happens at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143).

I was rather baffled when I heard that Webster University was screening a 1973 movie called BAFFLED on October 1st at Schlafly Bottleworks as part of the ‘Strange Brew’ film series. Baffled because I was completely unfamiliar with BAFFLED. I thought I was familiar with most ’70 psychotronic product and it was baffling that here was a film showing at this monthly cult film series that I had never heard of. It turns out BAFFLED is a 1973 Made-for-TV which partially explains why it was under my radar. Some of the best genre films of the early ‘70s were Made-for-TV movies, specifically the ABC Movie of the Week series which ran from 1969 to 1976.Who can forget DUEL, BAD RONALD, DAWN PORTRAIT OF A TEENAGE RUNAWAY, THE NIGHT STALKER, BORN INNOCENT, DON’T BE AFARID OF THE DARK, GARGOYLES, DR. COOK’S GARDEN, HORROR AT 37,000 FEET, SOLE SURVIVOR, MOON OF THE WOLF, THE LAST DINOSAUR, and of course KILLDOZER? The list goes on and on. Apparently BAFFLED slipped through the cracks of my childhood but I’m gonna make up for that next Wednesday at Schlaflys.

Leonard Nimoy starred in BAFFLED as Tom Kovack, a girl-chasing race car driver-turned ESP detective with a spunky female side kick (Susan Hampshire). BAFFLED opens with Kovack involved in what should be a fatal wreck on the race track. Pronounced dead at the scene, Kovack surprises everyone by coming around and climbing out of his car now armed with psychic ability. ESP was all the rage in the mid’70s and BAFFLED sounds like it was perhaps designed as a pilot for a TV series that was never picked up. It was apparently good enough to be released theatrically in some countries. All of this sounds more than good enough for me. It should be fun to see Nimoy in a role where his ears aren’t pointed so I’ll be at Schlafly Bottleworks next Wednesday evening (October 1st) for BAFFLED. Please join me.
