20th Century Fox’s DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is quickly approaching – the film opens in cinemas three months from today on July 11.

USA Today has the latest photos from director Matt Reeves’ upcoming film.

Caesar (Andy Serkis) has grown from his days as leader of a primate rebellion in 2011’s RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. “We see him as a statesman and a leader and someone who has galvanized all of these apes,” says Serkis. “We see the beginning of their world.” Reeves is impressed by Caesar’s care-worn face. “You can see a real haunted quality.”

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

This is how historians will trace Man’s downfall. In present-day Ape news, seven chimpanzees escaped their enclosure at the Kansas City Zoo on Thursday. Zoo director Randy Wisthoff said the chimps went on an unauthorized excursion.

One of them, he said, either found or broke off a 5- or 6-foot log or branch, leaned it against a wall and clambered to the top. Then that chimpanzee — the “ringleader,” Wisthoff called him — persuaded six friends to join him.

Here’s hoping the clever “ringleader” doesn’t answer to the name of Cornelius or Caesar.

Oscar-winning visual effects house WETA Digital – employing a new generation of the cutting edge performance capture technologies developed for Rise of the Apes and Avatar – will again render photo-realistic, emotionally-engaging apes. The film’s key behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Michael Seresin, production designer James Chinland, and VFX Supervisors Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon, VFX producers Ryan Stafford, editor Bill Hoy and Stan Salfas, and costume designer Melissa Brunning. The score is from the Academy Award winning composer Michael Giacchino (UP).

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is written by Mark Bomback alongside returning writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano, Kirk Acevedo, Karin Konoval, and Judy Greer star.
