GRAVITY Wins 7 Academy Awards; 12 YEARS A SLAVE Takes Best Picture – 86th Oscars
After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 YEARS A SLAVE won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, ” I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. It’s counterintuitive to the way we’re making films today. It’s a real achievement by Mr. McQueen here. I love this movie. I think it’s important. I think it’s important because it deals with our history that we haven’t come ‑‑ that we ‑‑ it’s important that we understand our history not for any kind of guilt, but that we understand who we were so we can better understand who we are now and why we’re having the specific problems we’re having or the successes we’re having; and more ‑‑ most importantly, who we’re going to be. So it’s important for that.”
GRAVITY took home 7 Oscars including Best Visual Effects, Best Score, Best Sound, Best Sound Mixing, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón.
On the success of the his movie, Cuarón told the press backstage, “The amazing thing actually is not so much the visual effects aspect, but the surprising thing was Sandra. That under the conditions that she was performing, the relationship actor/director was as if we were doing just a scene at the dinner table. So there was no obstacle around all the physicality, all the strain, all the complicated amount of cues that required ‑‑ and the amazing amount of make‑believe that it was required. It’s like she had to absorb absolutely everything. Her power of abstraction was fantastic. And no, not because I did a good job, it’s because Sandra is amazing..”
Last year Ang Lee won Best director for LIFE OF PI, while Best Picture went to ARGO.
Women were at the forefront at the Academy Awards.
Ellen Degeneres hosted the live ABC Telecast and in a year that saw a woman as AMPAS President, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, there were many female filmmakers who took home gold.
Dede Gardner won for her producing role on 12 YEARS A SLAVE and Catherine Martin won 2 for her work on THE GREAT GATSBY – one for Costume Design and a second for Production Design with fellow winner, Beverley Dunn. Makeup and Hairstyling artists, Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews, saw statuettes for their work on DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, while Jennifer Lee was one of three winners for the Best Animated Feature FROZEN. Caitrin Rogers was a co-winner on the Best Documentary Feature, 20 YEARS FROM STARDOM, and Original Song for “Let It Go” from “Frozen” went to Kristen Anderson-Lopez along with husband Robert Lopez (EGOT winner – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony).
During her acceptance speech, Best Actress winner for BLUE JASMINE, Cate Blanchett, thanked, “the audiences who went to see it and perhaps those of us in the industry who are still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films with women at the center are niche experiences. They are not. Audiences want to see them and, in fact, they earn money. The world is round, people.”
