A witty romantic drama, WORDS AND PICTURES stars the engaging duo of Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen working together on-screen for the first time.

Prep school English teacher Jack Marcus (OWEN) laments his students’ obsession with social media and good grades rather than engaging with the power of the written word. A one-time literary star, Jack has not published in years filling his spare time with drink versus the art of language. He meets his match in Dina Delsanto (BINOCHE) – an abstract painter and new teacher on campus, who was once celebrated for her art. From the start, the two flirt and provoke each other with equal relish.

With a performance review looming and his teaching job on the line, Jack hatches an inspired plan for galvanizing student interest in their studies: he declares a war between Words and Pictures, confident that the former can convey greater meaning than the latter. Dina and her art students accept the challenge between Jack and his English students, and the battle lines are drawn.

Following its world premiere as a Gala Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival, Roadside Attractions acquired US rights to the film. From Fred Schepisi, the Australian director has directed a slate of features, including PLENTY, ROXANNE, SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, and A CRY IN THE DARKNESS.

“This is a romance that is a little different, to say the least,” says Schepisi. “In a film like WORDS AND PICTURES, it’s important that your main characters have chemistry and boy, these two really do. It’s a chemistry that crackles. You can feel it in every scene and feel the emotions coursing between them. You can see how much they should be together, how much they’re meant for one another and that they’re always going to have a really electric relationship. And you can see that between Clive and Juliette as well.”

“I’m a romantic,” the director says. “But you’ve got to be careful. I like all the emotions to be genuine and not done just for the effect of the movie. You’ve got to feel it for real, it’s got to be there, the way we sometimes get to experience it in life.”

A gifted and loyal filmmaker, Schepisi has a team of brilliant creative keys he continues to work with, notably cinematographer Ian Baker, editor Peter Honess and production designer Patrizia Von Brandenstein.

WORDS AND PICTURES opens in theaters May 23rd.
