Angelina Jolie In First MALEFICENT Poster

Here’s your first look at Angelina Jolie in the new teaser poster for Disney’s MALEFICENT – the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.”

A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone.

Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

In the animated 1959 version, animator Marc Davis’ was looking for a specific way to design Maleficent.

In his research of the period and artwork of the Medieval times he came across a picture of a woman of a religious nature but was dressed elegantly devilish with flowing capes and clothes resembling flames. With this image in his head he centered around the appearance of flames, ultimately crowning the villain with “the horns of the devil.” He even went as far as to give Maleficent bat-looking wings for her collar. In the final production the individual character of the three good fairies and the elegant villain proved to be among the film’s strongest points. (Wikipedia)

In August, Disney and Jolie gave the D23 Expo audience an exclusive first look at the film. Starring as the title character in the highly anticipated live action film, Jolie chatted about the film before exiting to wild applause.

The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

MALEFICENT is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, with Angelina Jolie, Don Hahn, Matt Smith, Palak Patel and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay.

MALEFICENT opens in theaters on May 30, 2014.
