“Lick my plate, you dog dick!”

I remember being so excited about TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 in 1986 that I actually cut the ad out of the newspaper from the weekend before and taped it onto the dashboard of my car (if facebook had been around in those days, the ad would have been my profile pic). My father had taken me and three friends to see the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE in 1974 for my 13th birthday and I had waited 12 years for the sequel. I recall being thrilled with Tom Savini’s gore effects but somewhat disappointed in how far less frightening it was than the original. I made the mistake of going into it expecting the first film. TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 was more of an 80s cheese-fest, deliberately campy and entirely insane (the fact that the poster was a spoof of THE BREAKFAST CLUB should have tipped me off but even that went over my head at the time). TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 is a loud, gory, manic, satirical, over-the-top black comedy that is everything that people have claimed the original was, but wasn’t. If you look at this film as a satire of family values and Reganomics, it is wickedly funny and perversely ironic in its no-holds-barred attitude.

The same family of murderers and cannibals from TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE returns for the sequel. They now live in an abandoned amusement park and are occasionally slaughtering victims for decoration/meat purposes. One of their murders (of two ’80s-style douchebags) is captured live on the radio by a late-night DJ (Caroline Williams). A police lieutenant who has been on the chainsaw massacre case (Dennis Hopper) hooks up with her in order to fish for the murderers. Despite the film’s general lack of acclaim, director Tobe Hooper has a lot to be proud of with this movie. It’s so gonzo nutzoid it’s hard not to love. I mean, come on: don’t tell me you couldn’t watch Dennis Hopper go nuts with a chainsaw. And you’ll have the chance this Friday and Saturday night (September 6th and 7th) when TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 is screens in all its gory glory in a 35mm print midnights at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Avenue) as part of Destroy the Brain’s Late Night Grindhouse midnight series. The pre-show begins at 11:30.
