Watch Judi Dench & Steve Coogan In New PHILOMENA Trailer
Starring Oscar-winner Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, the first preview for PHILOMENA has debuted. (via The Guardian). The film is will be screened in the main competition section at the 70th Venice International Film Festival and will be a Special Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Watch the trailer below and look for the film, along with Dench’s performance, to be a strong presence at the BAFTAs (British Academy Film Awards) in 2014. The buzz coming out the two festivals should be a telling sign on how the film and Dench will fare with SAG (Screen Actors Guild) and The Academy. Some love for Coogan during the upcoming awards season would be a welcomed sign as well.
PHILOMENA is the true story of one mother’s search for her lost son.
When she fell pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena Lee was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a ‘fallen woman’. When her baby was only a toddler he was whisked away by the nuns to America for adoption. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him in vain.
The film is a bitter-sweet comedy, a compelling narrative of human love and loss, and a heart-breaking story that ultimately celebrates life.
The book “The Lost Child Of Philomena Lee” was published in 2009. It acted as a catalyst for thousands of adopted Irish children and their ‘shamed’ mothers to come forward to tell their stories. Many are still searching for their lost families.
BBC Films, BFI and Pathé present a Babycow/Magnolia Mae production.
Written by Steve Coogan & Jeff Pope and directed by BAFTA award-winner Stephen Frears (THE QUEEN), Pathe International will release PHILOMENA in UK cinemas November 1, 2013. The Weinstein Co. will distribute the film in the US.
