GREASE ‘Sing-A-Long’ Midnights at the Tivoli This Weekend

I had never seen GREASE until about ten years ago when I attended one of the ‘Sing-a-long’ versions out at the Galaxy. I was surprised by its dumb dialog, non-existent story, and how cheap a production it seemed. However, GREASE is a film which transcends the basic requirements of strong plot and narrative. It’s about joyous set pieces. It’s about goofy characters, interacting via goofy dialogue. It’s about nostalgia. It’s about awkward teen courtship. It’s about the joy of being young. The final scene of John Travolta and Olivia Newton John driving off into the sky in a flying car roots the film in a dreamy nostalgic/retrospective landscape, reminding us that we’ve been watching a fun musical fantasy, nothing more. In terms of achieving its goals – entertaining the audience, rocking us out, and putting a smile on our face – GREASE did exactly what it set out to do and made a mint.

So dust off your leather jackets for an ultimate summer night with the T-Birds and Pink Ladies as you sing-a-long with your favorite hits from the original 1978 film this weekend (August 23rd and 24th) when GREASE screens at the Tivoli as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’ Midnight series. Even better, this is the GREASE Sing-a-long version. This movie we’re all hopelessly devoted to will be projected on the Tivoli’s big screen with lyrics superimposed (in English!) right there on the screen so everyone can warble as poorly as John Travolta. GREASE is still the word at this musical extravaganza that thrives on full audience participation. Whether you show up as Sandy, Frenchy, Danny, or Kenickie, don’t miss the chance to dress like your favorite characters. Beauty school dropouts and race car drivers alike are invited to jive, cheer, and sing-a-long with Rydell High’s coolest couple.

Admission is a mere $8!
