ROBOCOP – part man, part machine, all cop is returning to the big screen. Cameras will roll on the Jose Padilha helmed film this Saturday, Sept 15th in Toronto. Sony Pictures plans to release the remake in theaters next year on Aug. 9, 2013.

In ROBOCOP, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

For a little refresher course… or for those who never saw the original, here’s the trailer for the 1987 film. The Paul Verhoeven (TOTAL RECALL, BASIC INSTINCT) directed version starred Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Ronny Cox and a bad-ass Kurtwood Smith.

Pretty cool, right? The original was a big hit when it opened in theaters and was unlike anything audiences had ever seen before. Combined with humor, violence and jolts, ROBOCOP has since become a cult classic and a lauded chapter to the 1980’s sci-fi compendium of films.

The new cast to the 2013 version is filled with heavyweights. While actor Joel Kinnaman takes on Weller’s iconic role as Murphy, ROBOCOP also includes Oscar nominee Gary Oldman (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY), Michael Keaton, and Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson (PULP FICTION), as well as Abbie Cornish as Murphy’s wife, Ellen, Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (LITTLE CHILDREN), Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Oscar nominated actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste. On March 2, 2011, it was announced that Padilha would direct the upcoming remake. The Brazilian director first came on the film scene in 2002 with his first feature film BUS 174. His next film, ELITE SQUAD, won the Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival.

Based on the 1987 motion picture written by Edward Neumeier & Michael Miner, the ROBOCOP screenplay is by Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk (GRAN TORINO).

Huge passion for film scores, lives for the Academy Awards, loves movie trailers. That is all.
