THE EXPENDABLES 2 – The Review

Violent, funny and tough… THE EXPENDABLES 2 is ready to show you what it’s made of!

Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) needs the help of The Expendables again… a group of misfits ready to face whatever comes their way for a paycheck. This time, however, things go terribly wrong and the gang is out for revenge. Traveling into enemy territory, the guys are ready to take down anything in their path for vengence.

THE EXPENDABLES 2 is even better than the first film! I cannot remember the last movie that had me throwing my arms up in excitement, or slapping my knee from laughing so hard. They waste no time digging into the action. The film doesn’t even begin with credits. They know what the audience wants. Plus, these are some of the biggest action stars in the world… they don’t need opening credits.

The action itself is bigger, louder, and more in-your-face. The film lacks a bit in the story department, but it really doesn’t matter. That is not what audiences want from a film like this. They want to be entertained with action and humor. THE EXPENDABLES 2 gives just enough story to set the movie in place, and then lets the ass kicking adventure take over.

Let’s talk acting… Sure, the acting in this film is not the best, but that just adds to the enjoyment of the film. Some are better than others, but I really enjoyed the bad acting Schwarzenegger (Trench)’s line delivery – as an actor it’s awful. It’s what he says, and the energy that he uses to say it that makes it incredible, reguardless of it being believable. The writing in this installment is way better than the previous film, and the guys have a lot of throwbacks to the action characters that they made famous. This movie is catered to action fans, and it pays off.

Jason Statham (Lee Christmas) is wonderful, as usual. There is one particular fight scene (where he is dressed as a priest) that stands out in my mind as absolutely stunning. The choreography of the fighting along with the movement of his robes really showcase just how beautifully he moves. Bruce Willis (Mr. Church) is always a delight to see on screen. I have always found him incredible as an action star, and it’s nice to see him back in the game. Sylvester Stallone (Barney Ross) showed us that he really knows what he is doing with this film . Since he was a big part of making this film, I have to give him credit for knowing his action flicks, and putting together such a dymanic cast! Especially Chuck Norris! Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you… but seriously, hi-five for that one!

Liam Hemsworth (Billy The Kid) is a great addition to the team. For an apprentice, they needed someone who was young enough to learn from them, but talented enough to be able to stand their ground. Hemsworth did just that. I do wish that Terry Crews (Hale Ceasar) and Randy Couture (Toll Road) had bigger parts. Crews is not only a force to be recond with in terms of action, but he’s funny too. I really wish the two had more screen time. Dolph Lundgren (Gunner Jensen) really impressed me in this one. I wish he had a bit more screen time too, because he had me in stitches! They could not have picked a better villain to go with this group of actors than Jean-Claude Van Damme. He and Stallone are matched quite well in terms of fighting ability. Again, my only complaint is that he could have been on screen a bit more. With an ensemble cast like this, it’s hard to balance everyone. Overall, they did a great job with that. I guess it’s good to leave the audience wanting more!
