Indeed, I respect the the patent and trademark process. When an organization is at the top of the ladder like Komen, so-called "smaller charities" act as parasites, seeking to piggyback on their success. Unfortunately, some of these groups are greedy and don't share Komen's objective: finding and ensuring access to the cures for breast cancer. Komen's legal department has every right to insure their integrity.

What funding are you talking about? Planned Parenthood is like any other provider of low-income medical services who get Medicaid or Title X funding for giving medical care.

Do you understand ANYTHING on this issue?

Do you think it's acceptable for Komen to sue smaller charities who dare to use the term "for the cure?"

REALLY?

Good grief, you are deluded.

Reading your review made me curious. It seems that you were awfully focused on the "shrill" Ms Brenner and did I understand that you were exasperated by her ominous tone?

Yes, this is a movie review. Your impression of the film. It is an interesting one. You seemed to discount the negative information about Komen because you didn't care for Ms Brenner's tone. I didn't get much else.

But your review makes an interesting point. This film will make a positive impression on some, not all. There still is much to do.

By the way, as a woman with breast cancer I totally disagree with your review. You've been pinkwashed, dude.

AnneMarie, I appreciate your thoughtful response, and I think the absence of the points you make in the movie support my comments and Tom's critique. That the filmmaker did not include them speak not only to a lost opportunity, but the danger of agenda-driven "documentarians." People will leave the cinema thinking they have been informed.

Not having seen the film, I don't know where Tom was off base. I commented to defend him. He reviewed a movie and was not presenting himself as a breast cancer expert. Hopefully, negative reviews such as his will deter people from seeing the film.

I don't defend the offensive comments of a reviewer I don't know.

Kristin, your remarks are appalling and offensive. This was a MOVIE REVIEW. Your attitude is exactly what Tom said he saw from the women in the movie that I found hard to believe. Wow, it IS real.

I can absolutely "know something" about breast cancer without having it. I am sorry you were struck at such a young age. I know that probably means you had the more aggressive form of breast cancer. And, as it happens, I am currently recovering from complications from non-cancer related breast surgeries so I actually DO know something of the physical pain and emotional toll it takes. I also know that the hell I've gone through is but a FRACTION of what breast cancer sufferers go through. And I know that health insurance companies like Wellpoint have retroactively dropped women who had been diagnosed with the disease to save money. How dare you assume what I know and whether I am "entitled" to have an opinion about a disease or not.

I suggest you redirect the energy you use to excoriate another woman who is NOT against you to expose and hold accountable the charities you refer to. Educate the people who are going to be misinformed when they see this movie. I wish you good health and an attitude adjustment.

Thank you to those who appreciated my comments. I will not respond again; this is not the appropriate forum for this debate.

Just because you "know someone who had breast cancer", does not mean you know ANYTHING about breast cancer.
It's disgraceful that someone followed a snake oil salesman rather than embrace treatments we KNOW work. Toxic? Yes, but it's the best we have right now.

My anger is over the lack of transparency and that is what I hoped would come from this film. Are you aware you may be buying something with a ribbon and not one CENT gets donated anywhere? Do you know that "Breast Cancer Action" was instrumental in getting American Express to stop their campaign riding on the "good will" tail of cause marketing when they were donating JUST one penny per transaction.

My hope is this. Before anyone purchases a "ribbon" product, they ask how much money is being donated. I understand corporations are not in the business of "charity" but if they are transparent in their campaigns, I have no problem with it. I just want people to know.

Second... where are they sending their donor dollars? Is the organization doing good.... I blogged about a woman who is having a bikini parade to "raise awareness" .... Well many women with BC can not wear a bathing suit, much less a bikini. It's hurtful to those she claims to help. She owns a tanning salon and is sending her money to one of these new age idiots who promotes vitamin D FROM THE SUN as a prevention for BC. Disgraceful. But I had a few people screaming at me and my readers.

Komen does not have such clean hands. They are still spending far too much raising "awareness" and not nearly enough trying to understand how to stop women (and men) from dying of the disease. More research. More helping the underserved and less "pink awareness." And NO MORE suing little organizations because they own "the cure" ..... There are far better organizations out there than Komen... doing far better work for the underserved and in the research community.

I agree... the infighting must stop. The problem is that the pendulum has swung far and getting everyone back on the same page has become daunting.

I appreciate your points, Barbara. Tom however, IS off base with many of observations. I did see the movie and I've read the book upon which the documentary is based..... Along with another fabulous book that explains why this ribbon has halted the progress.

We are surviving in greater numbers so there is an illusion of progress. Treatment? No real "meaningful" change. Another reviewer (also a man) complained there weren't any heart wrenching images of really sickly women and that was a problem with this film for him.

I think many do not realize how to get on the same page and that is what I hope to do with my efforts. ACT UP is a great example of showing how to get things done. The sheer numbers within the breast cancer community are so much greater, it has become extremely difficult. Add the fact that MANY non profits have popped up all over this country and many of them are making a good living off of the misfortune of those who have (had) a breast cancer diagnosis.

It's become a big business. Many are doing good. Many others will not let go of their grip. It's providing them a wonderful lifestyle.

Thanks for listening and I hope my words are not taken in the wrong context. My goal is the build bridges, not walls.

It’s disgraceful that someone followed a snake oil salesman rather than embrace treatments we KNOW work. Toxic? Yes, but it’s the best we have right now.

My anger is over the lack of transparency and that is what I hoped would come from this film. Are you aware you may be buying something with a ribbon and not one CENT gets donated anywhere? Do you know that “Breast Cancer Action” was instrumental in getting American Express to stop their campaign riding on the “good will” tail of cause marketing when they were donating JUST one penny per transaction.

My hope is this. Before anyone purchases a “ribbon” product, they ask how much money is being donated. I understand corporations are not in the business of “charity” but if they are transparent in their campaigns, I have no problem with it. I just want people to know.

Second… where are they sending their donor dollars? Is the organization doing good…. I blogged about a woman who is having a bikini parade to “raise awareness” …. Well many women with BC can not wear a bathing suit, much less a bikini. It’s hurtful to those she claims to help. She owns a tanning salon and is sending her money to one of these new age idiots who promotes vitamin D FROM THE SUN as a prevention for BC. Disgraceful. But I had a few people screaming at me and my readers.

Komen does not have such clean hands. They are still spending far too much raising “awareness” and not nearly enough trying to understand how to stop women (and men) from dying of the disease. More research. More helping the underserved and less “pink awareness.” And NO MORE suing little organizations because they own “the cure” ….. There are far better organizations out there than Komen… doing far better work for the underserved and in the research community.

I agree… the infighting must stop. The problem is that the pendulum has swung far and getting everyone back on the same page has become daunting.

I appreciate your points, Barbara. Tom however, IS off base with many of observations. I did see the movie and I’ve read the book upon which the documentary is based….. Along with another fabulous book that explains why this ribbon has halted the progress.

We are surviving in greater numbers so there is an illusion of progress. Treatment? No real “meaningful” change. Another reviewer (also a man) complained there weren’t any heart wrenching images of really sickly women and that was a problem with this film for him.

It’s become a big business. Many are doing good. Many others will not let go of their grip. It’s providing them a wonderful lifestyle.

(Disclaimer: I have not seen this movie and know the reviewer personally)

I am baffled by the comments I'm seeing. I can assure you Tom was not paid by Komen and reviews films because he loves them and he's good at it. I can attest that he is a wonderful father to his daughters and have been a female friend for many years, so any anti-woman accusations are completely unfounded. I trust if he used the word "shrill," it was appropriate.

As a fellow movie reviewer (lemoviesnob.com), I have observed a sea change in the tone and subject matter of documentaries that have been made in the wake of Michael Moore's successful career. They have become propaganda disguised as slice of life cin

The photo of the woman holding a sign that says "Honk if you love boobies" makes me gag. Don't women get enough of that kind of that kind of crap everywhere else? Now I have to see a woman dressed in Easter Bunny pink parading around with a coy, naughty (wink, wink) sign that seems to say "Disrespect us. We secretly LOVE it." This makes me think of the online article I read about the Nevada brothel, the Bunny Ranch, which held a fundraiser called "Save the Titties", where motorcycle riding men "donated" for a chance to jump over a line of bare-breasted women. Do we really need to be dishonoring the whole process of breast cancer fundraising by playing naughty-girl volunteer?
