One of my favorite new young actresses is Michelle Williams, a ranking firmly embedded in my psyche after seeing BLUE VALENTINE. As it happens, one of my all-time favorite actresses is Marilyn Monroe. I know, this sounds so typically masculine and shallow, but Monroe was a fascinating woman, an iconic star, and a cultural phenomenon… for better or worse. So, the moment I found our Michelle Williams would be portraying Marilyn Monroe, I had to pinch myself. You can see in the photograph above how strikingly beautiful, and more importantly accurate, her appearance as Monroe will be. The photograph below is newly released, giving one small glimpse into a unique visual style we may expect from the film. If MY WEEK WITH MARILYN carries such a stylistic and bold vision throughout the film, even only in parts, I can’t imagine anything short of a wonderfully enticing slice of historically-based American cinema.

On August 4th, The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced that Simon Curtis’ MY WEEK WITH MARILYN will have its World Premiere as the Centerpiece Gala selection, screening at Alice Tully Hall on Sunday, October 9 for the upcoming 49th New York Film Festival (September 30 – October 16).

The Weinstein Company, BBC Films and Trademark Films present in association with Lip Sync Productions a Trademark Films production. Release Date: November 4, 2011

Synopsis:

In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’. The film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Aurthur Miller (Dougray Scott).

Nearly 40 years on, his diary account The Prince, the Showgirl and Me was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as My Week with Marilyn – this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work.
