Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin Officially Hosting the Oscars

Sometimes, a Source is just a hip-hop magazine that hosts an annual awards show.  As was unveiled by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will be co-hosting the 82nd annual Academy Awards to be held in March.  This, as I’m sure you can tell, is about a 180 about face from what we said was going to happen, and what our source who was “close to the dealings” told us was going to happen.

I would like to take a little time right now to apologize to our readers for giving you such false information in that earlier report.  All of us at We Are Movie Geeks strive to give you the most up-to-date information about the film industry that we can, and, truthfully, sometimes we see something that we should see as too good to be true.  When a story such as what we ran last week falls into our laps, we “want” it to be true enough that we don’t take the time to research whether it is or not.  For that, I, on behalf of the rest of us who work for this site, apologize to all of you.

On to the news at hand.  Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman had this to say about the Martin and Baldwin team:

We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars.  Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.

In my opinion, I think Baldwin hosting by himself would be an amazing choice.  He has proven in his veteran years of acting to be quite the comedic, character actor, and his timing and persona on 30 ROCK are impeccable.  Martin, on the other hand, seemed a bit stiff in his dealings hosting the Oscars in 2001 and 2003.

This idea of having two hosts for the show seems like a decent idea.  The two, particularly these two, can play off each other quite well, but this whole notion seems like one more element the producers are trying to change up from previous years.  They don’t have to change everything for this next telecast.  Make changes here and there for a few years, so that it’s not so jarring and, on the other end, we will have the Oscars’ presentation that you are working towards.

The 82nd Academy Awards will be held on March 7th, 2010.
