Third ‘Batman’ Movie Could be Shot 100% IMAX

This piece of information could be stamped with the ever-popular “rumor stamp,” but, seeing as we are all movie geeks, we just can’t pass up anything ‘Batman’ related.  Plus, if it’s good enough for Ain’t It Cool, it’s good enough for us, right?  Harry posted an article stating ‘Batman 3,’ or whatever it is going to be called once Christopher Nolan decides to actually do it, could very well be shot entirely using IMAX cameras.

Now, if you saw ‘The Dark Knight’ in IMAX, you know full well this is incredible news.  The shots and scenes filmed with these monstrous, 70mm cameras were definitely noticeable.  Even seeing these scenes on a normal theater or even at home, you can tell there is a space about them that’s anything but commonplace.

If this news does end up being accurate, I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get another ‘Batman’ film until 2012.  The process of shooting with IMAX cameras is extremely costly and not cameraman friendly at all.  I remember an interview with Nolan once where he talked about the opening scene and filming the shot of the two clown thieves zip-lining between buildings.  He said during that shot, which is a tilt down towards a city street, the cameraman just had to let the gigantic IMAX camera go and let gravity take its course.  If the camera didn’t want to stop, there was nothing he could do about it.  However, if pulled off right, and Nolan is the guy to do it, this could mean every shot of ‘Batman 3’ will be just as stunning as those shots in ‘The Dark Knight.’
